Right, so the study group I am in have made a survey about the user behavior of Redditors and their opinion of the sites voting system.

Only problem is that of the 50 people we have PM'ed exactly 1 person has answered the survey.

So here goes.

If any of you use Reddit and have an opinion of voting systems please fill out this survey. I will reimburse you with 1 rep point and a gratuitous picture of David Hasslehoff snuggling with Pugs.

PLEASE do not fill out this survey if you don't use Reddit and don't know how to read. But how can you read if eyes aren't real?

EDIT: Survey is closed.

Just checked, I agree.

I am being asked how we should change it? I am thinking:

From:

Do you agree with the way Reddit suggests the voting system is used?

To:

Do you agree with these two suggestions?

EDIT: And just an update, not sure if this is your doing or one the girls posting an update on her Facebook wall but suddenly we have 9 submissions. Few actually reached the last section but it's progress.

Reddit Gold is a gift you can buy for people you want to reward for a great post:

https://www.reddit.com/gold/about

It's a topic we briefly touch upon, since gifts/favors can be cause of jealousy or animosity within a social group. Like for example a online forum.

We are focusing on the perceived affordances and usability of the voting arrows though.

done but i've no idea wtf karma is

Karma is the points you get for links, posts and comments. There are two types of karma, link karma, and comment karma. Click on you username in the top right and you should see the details

It's actually interesting that some people aren't very aware of the Karma points. We did some early qualitative discussions with two users and they didn't know anything about where the points came from or where they went.

Submitted. I had the same issue with the way q10 was worded and I tried to explain that in my response.

I also think karma was more meaningful when Reddit was smaller and less likely to be gamed by mainstream interests and brigaders. This may have also been because the users back then fit a certain demographic that was more likely to follow Reddiquette.

But, I think everything about Reddit was more meaningful back then (except for its ability to have widespread impact upon the "real world" because it couldn't do that when it was smaller)

True. It of course also depends upon whether you are a user that only uses the default sub-reddits or you have selected your own subscriptions. Smaller, more focused reddits definitely still feel more immersive. At least to me.

One thing that may be important to get data on is what medium people use Reddit through. Mobile apps? Desktop site? Mobile site? These each handle the display and use of karma differently, and I wonder if which one a person uses can affect whether they understand the karma system or not.

That's actually an interesting point. Our focus is primarily upon how what happens when a user votes and then reacts to the effect or non-effect of their action. This is mainly a visual thing.

They may for example see content they dislike, rise to the top of the front page. Causing frustration with the system they perceive they are some how affecting. A part of that impression is when they see the score on a post or submitted content.

How that is displayed on a phone/tablet is actually not something we have included in our considerations. It's too late to put that in the survey but I am going to add something about this.

Everyone starts with 1 link and 1 comment karma. You get 1 point for each submission you make. If you submit a link, think a hyperlink to this thread, you get Link karma. If you post a comment you get comment karma.

People then vote on these things depending upon whether or not they like it. It's typically topic starters or particularly controversial comments that will gain a lot of points. In a big forum, in a popular thread, a comment could easily get a thousand points or more.

I think the highest voted comment I've ever received was some bad Eminem pun that got like 1600 comment karma.
