Where did his "soul" go before they shifted him? I thought it went into the stone or whatever that the B'Hokaral had. It said something at the end of DHG didn't it?

His soul entered the bottle thing given to Coltaine by Baruk. Coltaine gave it to Duiker because he knew the crows would come for him. Duikers body was retrieved and umm.... fixed, by Baruk iirc.

Yes I'm sure were not done with him yet. But I thought the bottle came from Quick Ben. Acctually all it says is a wizard in onearms host.

I started a thread on the old board where I postulated that Duiker will become Trake's Shield Anvil. I also postulated that he might become Hood's Herald.

it was delivered to QB - from Baruk, via the tradeguild IIRC

I took it that the soulshifting bottle was QB's device, on behalf of the Empress so as not to lose Coltaine, maybe at Dujek's suggestion.
Baruk did the follow up collection and repair, as QB was otherwise occupied at the end of and post-MoI. And he's not the kind of mage to play nursemaid.
Don't forget, as of MoI, Darujhistan, which is basically run by a cabal led by Baruk was allied with the Malazans against the Pannion Domin. he was supposed to be reclaiming a valuable Fist for the Empress, but ended up with the Historian instead.
- Abyss, not the kind to play french maid. Generally. What?

Yes and He starts to tell the story of the chain of dogs to the surviving bridgeburners at the very end of MOI (Eprologue). But really he is only needed to record the story. for the Malazan Empire. I can't see him playing a big part in a future book.

Just had a thought (sort of a headache with pictures in it *g*) - could Duiker be the one telling you the whole MBotF?? In GotM it says right in the beginning that now we open the MBotF... and who would be more fitting for writing the MBotF than an imperial historian like Duiker? Well just an idea... can't really see how it would work as he would have to have talked to everybody involved in the story but he still could have written a part of it, couldn't he? and thank you, I KNOW it's a fictional story but i get carried away...

Perhaps he collated it from various eyewitnesses, sources, etc.? Seems the sort of thing he'd do, perhaps he was ordered to?
Don't think he'll play a large part in the rest of the series to be honest...

Duiker could be writing the MBotF the same way Bilbo and Frodo wrote LotR --by relating stories told to them by others

I seem to remember Duiker having a 'list of the fallen' in DHG. Maybe this series is sort of that list, carried on. Chronicling the deaths of all these major folks...

... like:
"And now that the ashes have once more been stirred we close the old book. We have whitnessed the story of the Fallen in a ragged world - words without any warmth.
Outside the morning lights the world with sparks of life whilst inside the memories of blood and tears linger still as we close the book of the Fallen.
What have we learned, friends, in those stories that could have been about us, over and over?
We are history relived and there is nothing, forever and all, nothing else...
...but hope."
:Erm: I hope you like it... just looked up the beginning of gotm and altered it a little

i always thought the malazan tales of the fallen were just stories taken out of the empires records. it mentions in DHG how kellenvad ordered duiker to become imperial historian, but i got the impression that he wanted everything chronicled. also it says somewhere that each other had to have a historian with them(MOI i think, with the artist and whiskeyjack).
right at the start of gotm isnt there something about this is taken from the malazan books of the fallen that chronicle the empire???

hmmmm i think only definite conclusions can be drawn once erikson reveals his grand plans.
for my 10p's worth, i dont think that erikson would go to the effort of saving duiker in such a way if he's not going to be involved again, and from what ive heard he is one of the more popular characters, so bringing him back would be fan-pleasing. as for the theory of these books being told exclusively by duiker, i think its possible but there are a couple of things that just might not fit right. first, if you consider the mind boggling scale and detail of the history of the books, it may be a little much to assume that duiker could attain and then chronicle such a vast amount of knowledge, the amount of people he would have to talk to, the places he would have to have gone etc etc. it may be possible that those who have seen and experienced the history of the world (rake osserc & gods) could contribute but that leads to the next problem which is objectivity. Its stated often that duiker is impartial and unbiased, but that is arguably impossible, at least very difficult, even more so if he is using stories told to him by others.
i still think its possible, but i just have a feeling that erikson might have something 'grander' planned. has anyone debated whether gothos could possibly be involved in the chronicleing (?). i know the malazan history is probably a blink in the eye for him but......................

I've always had this theory that we're going to find out that the book of tehb fallen is narrated by aragan, the veteran who pops up so many times... but no real evidence for that...
either that or fisher kel tath, the great historian.. wheover he is...
or possibly just by SE and noone form the malazan world

I dislike the way SE keeps using terms like "Late Empire" in his chapter prologues. Especially the one about Grub, it basically gives us a timeline when the Empire will end. Makes all the events in MBotF have a tinge of futility in them...
