Portals and gates

Hi all,
So I just started Reapers Gale and still haven't figured out how gates work. Am I alone or should I keep reading? Throughout the first 6 books it appears that some people can open gates whenever they want but some mages can't do this at all.
Kalam was able to open a gate into the Imperial warren but he isn't a Mage. How is this possible?
While Quick Ben has open portals/gates previously so why didn't he open one when they were trapped in Y'Ghatan or under it?
I guess my question is what determines where and when a gate can be opened?
Or is this explained further in?
Cheers

This thread is in the wrong forum. Let's have it moved by a mod/admin, and THEN some answers might be in order. Otherwise it's a spoilermine.

Since you are posting about later books this should not be here. Post this in the reapers gale forum

Thread moved to the relevant forum. Best to post in the book you're up to in order to avoid spoilers for other users and yourself.

All hail Silencer!
Now, on topic..
Mages can open gates. Kalam cannot. Iirc you are referring to what he does in DG, and there he used something QB had given him, just in case he might need it. Also, iirc, QB was not at Y'Ghatan, hence no need to open any gates, and the other mages present at Y'Ghatan were not powerful enough. Except Sinn, and she's not all there.

There are different kinds of gates, just as there are different kinds of warrens, and different ways to use them.
Similarly what's simple for a mage or ascendant aspected to a particular warren could be near impossible for one aspected to another.
Shadowthrone and Cotillion more or less goes wherever they wants via Shadow/Meanas. Presumably as a God of Shadow one can simply walk into any shadow anywhere and exit somewhere else, assuming there's a shadow there to use.
Apsalar uses the same Meanas route in TB, courtesy of Shadowthrone's gift, but she has to still travel physically from points A to B.
Kulp, a Meanas aspected squad mage, can't make a gate at all. To fix the breach in DG he created the illusion of one and then convinced bigger powers to make it real.
The Hounds seem to exist in the world and Meanas at the same time and can come and go as they please.
In RG, (SPOILERS if you haven't finished the book yet....)

... the Bluerose people had to use blood sacrifice to open a gate through Elder Shadow for Clip and company to pass through into Stavald Demelain, and it took effort from Silchas to open the gate at the other end.

Also regarding yghatan, quick Ben wasn't there, bottle was, but he can't open gates as his magic works differently. Plus the inferno caused by the fire killed magic in the surrounding area. ( I think, don't remember exactly)

The firestorm had burned away the other warrens in Yghatan and the surrounding area so most warren related sorcery didn't work. Bottle was still able to talk to his animals, but neither he nor the other mages could do anything more.
Sinn was an exception because she had Thyr/Kurald Thyrllan among her warrens. None of the squad mages did, or not to a degree that mattered.

Thank you admin for moving to the correct forum. Sorry English is my third language so I'm reading to improve it. I guess I missed some stuff so might re-read some of the earlier books.
