Finished Broken Homes....

That ending.... I absolutely loved this book, but that ending...

I KNOW!!!!!!

The only other book whose ending left me feeling this way was Guns of Empire by Django Wexler.

2-for-1 sale up on audible.com. Depending on what you want. the fantasy selection is pretty awesome...

Butcher's ALERA is on there, Staveley's UNHEWN THRONE, Clive Barker's GREAT AND SECRET SHOW 1 and 2 (which are totally fucked up worthwhile in the bestest Barker way if you haven't read them), Ken Liu's DANDELION DYNASTY that a bunch of you have been praising, Sullivan's RIYRIA, Hobb's TAWNY MAN... some solid milsf too, Weber's STARFIRE series (formerly STARS AT WAR, some pretty great fleet vs fleet stuff in there) and Campbell's LOST FLEET BEYOND THE FRONTIER. Fucking NEUROMANCER is on there!

Pro-tip: you can only buy one 2-for-1 set off the sale at a time, but you can keep going back. Annoying, still worthwhile.

Seriously, if you're not an audible member it's a good opportunity to grab the free month, buy a pile of these on the sale and then drop it.

The First Law Trilogy---the performer's good at drawing out a (very darkly, yet also lightly) humorous reading, without going overboard. Tbh I might find most of the characters too stereotypical and a bit too unremittingly awful in a drier reading.

Pronounces "Glokta" like "Gloctor" too---probably not intended by the author, but I enjoy it... reminds me of the way Lister pronounces "Kruppe" like "Cropper" (another almost certainly unintended added bit of amusement)....

Finished book two of The First Law trilogy, about a fifth of the way through book three---while the first book is the one I usually see mentioned in lists of "the best fantasy novels" it seems by far the weakest, riddled with cliched metaphors and flat, commonplace caricatures in place of characterization. In contrast, metaphors in books two and three are strikingly unusual, and most characters a little more deeply fleshed out; many of the caricatures from the first book undergo significant character development.

The reader's choice of accents is a bit questionable---a major character with what's clearly intended to be an East Asian background is inexplicably given a comically exaggerated French accent, complete with dropped h's (which have no justification in the written text). Several characters are given ridiculous lisps... overall, though, the performance is very good, if a little on the silly side.

So after 5 books. 2 new and 3 I’ve read before that I wanted to listen to...I’ve sorted out that audiobooks are simply not for me. I can’t pay attention without drowsing, but worse is that it turns out things sink in better if I read the words, and can go back over them if I need. It sucks because I really wanted To be into audiobooks.

Ah well.

Andy Serkis reading The Hobbit. I think YouTube takes these down as they pop up, so listen/watch while it's available. Enjoy, and like and subscribe. Posted Image

Just realized that Roy Dotrice (ASoIaF audiobooks) died a few years ago. He was in his 90's, GRRM should have hurried up. Oh well.
