@Blend - yeah, I can influence all the way to the Hive if I want. Got stop the ancient ships from moving against you either (much as I wish they would stay put

If I do influence thataways, would you like to exchange ambassadors? I'm not planning to attack you either way, not when it would involve having my fleet way up there while Khell, Gnaw or IH might try something sneaky back in my core sectors far away from said fleet.

Yeah, I'll diplo with you if you influence up into my corner of the galaxy.... for now.

Intercepted audio recording from Orion Command
..........[unintelligible loud arguing for several seconds, then the distinctive octaves-too-low voice of Chairman Vannov rises above the rest -- The arguing voices quieten.........]
If it please the Assembly,
I too wish we could all just settle our grudges with the others the *old* way. Face-to-FACE; blade-to-BLADE.
Does Chancellor Wennek think me such a fool that I would agree to keep the peace indefinitely? Do you think I told them that in good faith? PAH! Weakling rats are not worth my time, much less my honest word! The illusion of peace shuts them up as quickly as a plasma bolt, so it suffices for now.
Open your eyes though my brothers! We are surrounded by hostile races on all sides and the ancients pose a constant threat. There is a fine line between confident aggression and a foolish waste of resources. Our resources are strained this cycle with exploration and shard-hull retrofits. *Chancellor Wennek* would have us dump our reserves into an offensive that our economy can't hope to survive? No Chancellor, that will not do.
For this cycle at least we must make believe that our intentions are peaceful and make a show of TAKING OUR TIME as we expand outward into the galaxy. The Council thinks that this....civilized....turn-taking will avoid war. LET THEM.
Our history books tell this story countless times; let us HEED those stories now. The weakling races cower beneath the council's rules and find out far too late that the ORION war machine is not so easily cowed.
[...............hushed muttering and calls of agreement]

Intercepted audio recording from Chancellor Wennek's private office on Rigel Prime
.........thinks he can humiliate ME in front of the War Council? For talking about going to WAR no less!!!
So little respect he has for our family's hallowed name. If it were not for my ancestors' glorious sacrifice at the Rang incident...Vannov's cowardly line would be EXTINCT!!!
[sound of a fist slamming a wooden table]
The War Council of the Elders has become a school of baitfish. All following the leader of the day, moving about with the currents, and not a single one of them with any clue which way they should be going to avoid the death by predation!!. Vannov's leadership has staved off the weakling races for this cycle, but he has no VISION, no stomach for WAR!!!
[a calm thoughtful voice speaks up]
Perhaps it is time Vannov's leadership came to an end then Master Wennek. He ended your father's Chairmanship with the point of a spear, as was his right. I think we *all* know however that it was your father's advanced age rather than Vannov's prowess that lost him the battle. Our succession-by-combat laws exist for a reason don't you know....so that the weak and complacent cannot undermine our ideals...
[ dismissively, and in a hushed tone...]
Enough UnderChancellor Flemmen. We cannot know what recording devices the Council of Cowards have placed in these walls. We will discuss this....................

A mahogany desk rises from a shallow pool. Behind it, seven draconian heads sit atop serpentine necks.
"Now that we have unlocked space, we have a decision to make," the central figure speaks.
"It is very simple," the head to the far left says. "we should focus on establishing an industrual proletariat and spread the revolution from our centre, by arms and indoctrination if the short sighted aliens cannot see the benefits. Advanced Mining is definitely a research target for this purpose."
"But there is so much money to make from selling our products. The waterbed stocks are already rising to unprecedented heights, now imagine what we can earn if we manage to properly market all these useless beaches and land masses to non-aquatic alien species as a tourist destination? I say we focus on Advanced Economy." the head to the immediate right of the central figure objects.
"Nein, nein, nein!" the head opposite on the far right screams, drops of acidic saliva spreading over the table. "For once I agree with the dispicable communist. We should not invite FOREIGNERS to OUR soil. We should go out and use our superior research to subdue these inferior beings, not enrich them! ANTI-MATTER SPLITTER IS SITTING THERE, TAKE IT BEFORE SOME SLIMY LITTLE TALKING ANUS FROM MU WHATEVER PICKS IT!"
"Oh, shut it," the head in the middle of the left side says. "Twenty years ago you advocated a war of extermination on plankton, because, and I quote "there's trillions of them, and only one of us." Never mind that they aren't sentient and our eco-system depends upon them. A harmonious co-operation between all species ought to be the target, now as then. To further this goal, I suggest a research focused on reaching out. Some better propulsion mechanism for our species would be the best focus, for now."
"But what if they are more like my.... right neighbour?" the opposite head in the middle of the right side asks, around a fat cigar. "Some deterrent, a guarantee of mutual destruction, like neutron bombs, should do the trick, right? We can even couple it with Nano-Robots, or maybe with Starbases?"
"So hopelessly conservative," the head to the left of the central head says. "Not to mention, economically unsustainable. we have no launch platforms for those bombs and our income is meager both in money and in materials. I very much doubt that we will soon be able to build two star bases or fighters in one go, let alone three at the same time. Our goal should be to achieve the maximum output from our current means. Clearly, research into Advanced Robotics would make us less dependent on money."
"Always looking for the alternative source, the hippie," the head to the far right sneers.
"At the least, it is independent from foreign influence," his neighbour and the far left side comment in unison.
"But costly," the middle head objects. "our advantage in knowledge is best exploited by researching en masse: small increments to keep us ahead of the curve, enabling future research at the fraction of the current cost."
"Look at the fucking technocrat, being so reasonable!" the far left growls. "Two centuries ago, you were preaching us with the thought that the sun was Ooo-graw-who-shines-and-devours. It took concerted reasoning from all but cigar face, who was your devout follower, not to mention a thirty year experiment with a now extinct species of walking bird, to convince you of natural selection and the fact we make our own destiny. And now, you're the champion of unfocused research for research's sake, because that's how iy was always done and what is the cheapest. Look at the Ooo-graw-damned game board, idiot. We have ancients to blow up before we can place the science cubes we need to expand, and neither neutron bombs nor Nano-Robots nor Anti-Matter Splitter will help with that."
"Let's take a vote, then," the right head of the central trio, Capitalist, comments.
"Oh, fucking democracy again. The will of the weak," the far right growls.
"it is the only time your input is counted," the left head of the central trio, Globalist, mutters.
"Still, I think it is idiotic that we have seven heads and brains but only two front claws to raise. We can never do multiple choice, only aye or nay," his left neighbour, Moderate Socialist, says.
"Multiple choice would lead to each supporting only our own suggestion. And seven heads and yes-or-no at the least always leads to a majority. We are made for democracy, my friends, as much as Extreme Left and Extreme Right may hate it," the central head, Belief of the Moment, says.
"At the least it shows our superiority over the rest of the galaxy," Extreme Right whispers.

Plus if Gnaw and I work together on modding like we've been doing here (i.e. I take care of all the draws, he takes care of the map, playerboards, and tile placements), we could get through each round fairly quickly.

Well Blend so much for getting Gnaw and D'rek in on this dastardly plan. Oh well would have been fun to get a years worth of Eclispe in a weeks period of time.
