What is the purpose of the Barghast? I'am in chapter 13 and lost a bit track. Would be great if someone can help.
They want to get their old homeland back? Is that their sole purpose? Are they not connected to the Malazans anymore? Why was Tool made the new warleader again?

Their ancestor-gods have promised them a holy war in a far off land, and they are seeking it out. Tool is the new warleader because he is the son-in-law of the late Humbrall Taur and because he is a superior warrior.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Thank you. But they went alone to lether and have no connection to the BH? And now they fight against the Akrynnai because they think there purpose is to get their old land back? Or they were just the first enemy?

They went to Lether with the remnant of the Grey Swords that switched from Fener-worship to Wolves-worship at the end of Memories of Ice. Unfortunately the Grey Swords were slaughtered upon arrival. But yah the Barghast are not there with the Bonehunters at all. Throughout the book they are seeking out a fight, but with little guidance and lots of restlessness and political infighting nipping at them, and settle on the Akrynnai for little reason other than they prove to be potential combatants. Think of it as the inverse of what Rake has been doing for the Tiste Andii all these centuries to keep them from total ennui.

From what i recall they couldnt get much information from their gods except they had a war to fight. Which in itself is not very helpful at all
