Ok. So we learn that Kellanved and Dancer become Shadowthrone and Cotillion. Now did they ascend after they were betrayed by Laseen or did Laseen become empress because Shadowthrone ascended. I am guessing its the former coz the two gods appear to hate teh Malazan army. Just wondering if this was explicitly stated anywhere tho.

Night of Knives by Ian Esslemont is the prequel story of these events. Best read after Midnight Tides and before The Bonehunters because it features some other revelations.

They came with white hands and left with red hands.

as worry said KOK explains it all and its a smaller book, less POVs so its easier to fly through and keep track of things. I didnt read it until right before TCG but it should be read earlier to help break down and explain a lot of the relationships of the old guard of Kel Dancer Daseem Laseen and the others. quick read though so its nice.
