My pile is all electronic at this point...I guess I should start referring to it as a To Be Read File? Like Serenity, I pick up a lot of stuff on sale and archive it.

DO NOT get me started on the ETRP...

I JUST started the whole eBook sales thing.

Picked up ANATHEM for $2 and a Hugh Howey short piece called GLITCH. Nearly ALL of GGK's books are only $5 each on amazon.ca as well...which doesn't help. Neither do the cheapish bundles (Julian Stockwin's KYDD series is in very reasonably prices eBundles and I'm not made of stone).

Anyways, my new goal is to force the continued migration to eBooks for space and cost issues.

It's not easy though.

Nice to hear so many varying degrees of ToRead Pile mentalities!

Kindle FTW.

I buy my study type books in hard copy and my most beloved books in hard copy. Other than that I do kindle because my TBR stack was out of control. But to answer the original question. Yes I have gotten rid of books that I got then never read.

Only reason I'd get rid of an unread book is if, like Abyss, i find myself REALLY disliking where the series is going (btw, I like the Darkness books by Turtledove, and I'm sad they're out of print so I can't hunt them down anymore and finish the series), :)

As a general rule, I tend to be like Gothos, except I usually buy 3-4 books at a time--a few from my "ongoing series" and 1 or 2 to try something new.

What I love Darkness! I didn't know it was out of print. I have them in my room. My BAM used to have some of them in the discount isle I can check if anyone wants me to.

I have the first 4. I'd love to get the rest.

Purged a few unread ones.

But what's worse, and i'm surely not the only one who's done this (i hope):

Purged something that i've read.

Re-bought it a few years later as i wanted to read it again......

(i cry in shame)

Guilty. Or worse, I've sold something, regretted it, and now it's out of print and going for exorbitant rates on the used marketplace.

Done this with DVDs too. Luckily, those get consistently cheaper over time, so no big loss there...

Gods no, I've done that loads of times :p The worst case would be, I think, Revelation Space. I bought it when it first came out, read it, didn't like it much, got rid of it. Then a few years later I read Chasm City and loved it, so decided I wanted to give RS another go, bought it again, and a few other Reynolds books. Then I needed to reclaim some shelf space and saw the Revelation Space Collection on Kindle for £18, so I bought that and took the paperbacks to the charity shop. But now I've become such a fan of Reynolds' work I'm considering getting all the paperbacks again, shelf space be damned :p

I'm totally guilty of that too Coco.

This is why I never get the Urge To Purge™; most of my books I could conceivably want to reread sometime in the (perhaps distant) future, and either I went to a good deal of trouble tracking it down the first time, or I got such a good deal on it (or both) that it doesn't seem worthwhile to try finding it again 20 years down the road, likely paying way more than I did the first time around.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

i should note in relation to the out of print comment above - this is a real danger for me for my books about martial arts.

Since they're often small, limited print runs (owing to market size) the chance of getting something again later for a decent price disappears quickly.

Interestingly, thanks to buying stuff when it was available, got several books bought for a total of about £100 that go on the second hand market for multiples of that.

per book.

If i'm ever fired or can't work and need money fast, it's my last resort.

After manwhoring, selling a kidney, etc.

I think the Reila Gracie book (in original Portuguese) was well over $150 when it disappeared off the internet - as in all the copies went to hands that aren't giving them up any time soon - and that was just a controversial biography.

Some of the truly useful training manuals and so on are definitely in the thousands. Good retirement plan, Coco with Marshmallows.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

I've purged three things from my TRP thus far. The first was a tpb of Stan Nicholls first ORCS trilogy. I read the first book of it and the main villain just didn't do it for me.
Spoiler
The spoiler comment about the second book was what made me halt in mid-book and straight up donate it to Goodwill.

The second was the first several books in E.E. Knight's VAMPIRE EARTH series. I read the first few pages of the first book after I bought them on the suggestion of a friend. They just really didn't do it for me.

The final was Russell Kirkpatrick's FIRE OF HEAVEN trilogy. I bought it on a whim while at the bookstore and later stumbled onto the fact that every review of those books were very very unfavorable. I just ditched them without a second thought.
