So, we had a contest over at Deviantart where the goal was to make a painting of a Malazan character in the style of Alphons Mucha. Here are the entries:

Had to look up Alfons Mucha. For those interested this is a list of images in google:

If the winner ought to be the one who is closest to the style of Alfons Mucha I think either 1 (icarium) or 5(Champion) wins. The Shore picture is disqualified because it looks nothing like Alfons style. I think The Champion of Light wins, mainly because I don't like the depiction of Icarium and the Champion looks suitably inhuman.

If we are merely talking about depicting Malazan characters I like the Champion of Light and The Shore the most.

Neither Icarium or Brood look nearly non-human enough.

The art style for the icarium picture looks just like mucha's. Doesn't actually look like my image of icarium, but its a great piece of art.

Tavores image captures the character well, and does muchas style decently. Champion of light would be my third pick.

I like Icarium the most, too - it has a great blend of many things going on all at once. I especially like the tree.

It actually looks a lot like how I picture Tayschrenn (particularly when he's meditating in RoTCG).
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Mucha is one of the few artists I actually know a bit about because the Art Nouveau movement is one that my wife is a massive fan of, so we have a few Mucha books around the house. These drawings are flipping ace! Gonna show them to her!

As for the winner, Icarium is the most like the style (IMO) though as has been mentioned, he doesn't quite look like how I imagined Icarium, but then I never imagined any Malazan character in a Nouveau style, so in that sense it is just an interpretation through a certain art style, and doesn't necessarily have to match my own imagination of him.

Wow, I really like the reasoning and constructive criticism you guys bring to the table :wallbash:


I'm a little biased, because one of them is mine, but if I had to pick one I think I'd pick Tavore, just because it really captures her essence, as well as that cool juxtaposition between the linework and soft skin:)

Tavore all the way! I'd like to get in touch with the artist, maybe have them remove the 'Tavore Paran' bit but I like 'Unwitnessed' - the expression on her face just owns that - unwitnessed, and I just don't care. I like the idea of a card called 'The Unwitnessed' as well

Yup, thanks a bunch!

While I have your attention, just want to say I'm impressed with your recent work - you've become the most consistent (in terms of quality) and prolific malazan artist on here - kudos dude! :)

edit: are you the artist then? cause the colours are a bit wonky if I'm honest - it's her expression that lifts the whole thing imo :)

With the colours, I was kind of trying to keep in line with what Mucha did.
I can muck around with them if you've got a better idea.

well I would swap the Ukrainian flag colours (as a Ukrainian, I'm allowed to make fun of it. Piss-yellow and washed-out blue, wonderful) with something a bit more martial - I hesitate to dictate specific colours as you should be better at that than me.

Make the blue darker. Make the circle the moon, but with some jade elements knocking through it. But real subtle-like. Real backgroundy, undefined shapes. Sell it as a poster for $19.99.

Chose the Shore. Icarium Tuskless didn't quite sit good with me... Still, all of these are great work.

edit: as far as that goes, the image of Icarium is laughable and the rest are crass, imo

Unfortunately, there is a barrier between the keen amateurs and those that have some species of gift when it comes to art:

I'm happy to be the Simon Cowell in this scenario and point out the difference ;)
