I've made an unofficial IRC channel for us on Freenode (chat.freenode.net). The channel is #malazan.

Here's a link to Freenode's in-browser webchat: http://webchat.freen...hannels=malazan though I recommend using a real IRC client (mIRC, Hexchat, Textual, Irssi, Colloquy, Limechat, KVirc, etc). There are also many mobile IRC clients, as well as browser extension clients.

Come join.

Please.

I'm scared of being alone with ChanServ. He's so rude to me ;)

EDIT: For those who are new to IRC, it falls somewhere in between IM and email — people don't watch it constantly but they also don't just check it once a day. People will not always respond instantaneously, and many simply leave their client open and idle in the channel (sit there while doing other things and tab over to check if there's anybody talking every once in a while). If you want to get in contact with someone specifically, you can include their nick in your message which will highlight them. This sends them a notification (flashing menu bar, beep noise, etc) that someone has typed their nick.

Joining an IRC channel for a minute and then judging it based off of that is, to me, like watching a soccer game for 30 seconds and then complaining that nobody has scored in that time.

I'm sure we've had or have IRC channels already.

We did have one, but that was a few years ago, and no one currently uses it. Also, it wasn't on Freenode, which is a popular server.

Additionally, someone with the nick PissBreath joined and then left after a minute. I thought there was a chat service offered through the site.

Yeah there is. Does IRC offer any particular advantages?

I just figured that at least some other people on here use IRC regularly in other channels, as it's still very common. For instance, I'm in 3 other channels daily because they're relevant to my interests and have nice groups of people that chat. So, as long as I'm in those, I though why not be in one for this community?

And the only way to connect to the chat that currently exists in the navigation is to use a web browser and it lacks certain features (discoverability, highlighting/notifications, etc.) that IRC has. I think people are a lot more likely to keep a lightweight program open regularly (I use Hexchat) than one lone tab in the browser.

EDIT: Studlock was in there for a bit earlier and we had a nice little chat ;)

EDIT2: And then someone named BewareTheShart was in there too, and we had another nice little chat about pedophiliac basketball coaches and partying.

Nothing wrong with alternatives. IRC isn't integrated into the site (and seriously, who doesn't keep their browser open 90% of the time they are on the PC anyway? O.o), but there's nothing wrong with offering an alternative chatting location for people who use, or might like to use, IRC. It's no different from members having a G+ Hangout. *shrug*

Personally I quite like mIRC as a client. But every IRC channel I've bothered frequenting hasn't been around long enough for me to even install mIRC on my last two computers. ;)
