Riddle me this...

So... any ideas? It's pretty old, so could refer to something not immediately obvious today.

First thought was that it could be a bee, but it doesn't all make sense - like the pipe ref.

My Aunt found the cutting - I just thought I'd see if anyone here had any better suggestions.

Sun doesn't fit with the changing part though does it? The sun is constant

lamented by all and swiftly passing, die in prime. I keep thinking of fire for some reason

Uh I just read this riddle aloud and immediately heard a deep rumbling laughter behind me. Turned around and saw nothing.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

If its an old riddle perhaps its a candle or match or lantern? But still dont seem right sic it pays no heed to the light and you would not use a lantern in the day?

Googled lanter and eye together and found a bulls eye lantern, possible if you met a stranger in the road you would close the light in the same way we turn of the brights on our cars.

I have seen this riddle before and if memory serves it has pretty much remained unsolved !
I seem to remember the best guess for an answer being "fame", although even that's stretching it a bit.
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

Sanctions maybe? high risk of cancer and high rate of class actions? I don't really know tbh but its not all roses.

actually the whole opening is just not tobacco at all. never heard of striped tobacco.
