Well there was Reign of Fire, but that movie was such a disappointment. And there is Dallas Buyers Club, which I want to see (and for which McConaughey is the front runner for the Oscar this year). Other then that, I can only recall that he's been in numerous "RomCom" type movies.



In True Detective he is superb.

True Detective is probably my favorite HBO show right now. I'll forgive the patent 'HBO gratuitous nudity shot' because it ends with Woody Harrelson yelling at someone 'Did she suck your dick?!?!?!'.

But yeah I know it's a detective show but it rarely has the pacing, mood and imagery of a horror and I think that's how my brain is starting to process it.

Watching episode 4 right now. My husband lived in LA for awhile he keeps commenting on the scenery. This show is so good, I can't believe I didn't know about this until now.

That motherfucking 5-minute+ long take at the end of episode 4 was AMAZING. It was all one shot and they only had a day and a half to practice and shoot it.

This is fucking awesome. The family stuff is a bit dull, but the rest of it is just of the highest quality. Nothing original, but perfectly done.

Regarding the earlier brief discussion of what McCounaghey's been in - sure, he built up a huge rep for being a bland rom-com frontman for ages, but he's totally reversed that well before this show. The last two or three years or so, just about every film he's been in has been on my radar- not got the chance to see all of them yet, but the ones I have, he's been fucking fantastic.

Basically I watched this show mostly on the basis that he's in it.


Also: what are the odds on the writer of this show being an R Scott Bakker fan? I'm saying quite high...

I never really thought they were fans of R. Scott Bakker, more so a fan of weird fiction (specifically the King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers rather than Lovecraft) and cosmic horror which naturally lends itself to pessimistic POVs. I still not really sure if it's simply going to be some kind of crazy human based cult or a legitimate cosmic horror. I'd be fine with either, but I feel like some people might feel angry if something supernatural was going on.

Watched Ep 4 with the gf yesterday; we started Ep 5 but got distracted midway.

McConais a serious badass in this series.
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly.
