We are actually planning stuff now. Meet-up looks like a sealed deal if the GF gets the invite - she doesn't mind going to CHI first "since it is obviously very important to you" I believe the actual words were :-/

Yeah, I think this was basically me signing an empty sheet of paper on which the fine print will be filled in later. Just hope you 'mericans appreciate my company to make it worth it. On the other hand, she (and I) really enjoyed Twelve;s visit, so she's prepared.

Well twelve is like the retarded cousin of the forum. So she isn't prepared at all.

The GF got her invitation to Boston, but not as a speaker. basically, it's up to her professor to decide if she can go. If she goes, we'll come to Chicago for the meet-up (although I might have to pick her up on the airport on saturday).
Meanwhile, we're thinking of doing Chicago - New Orleans - New York as a two-week holiday.
The one question we're stuck with, is: is NO worth it in the summer?

NO is never worth it.
Even worse in the summer. You pansy euros will melt like ice cubes in a hot saucepan.

I have not been to New Orleans but we do have a forum member who lives around that area. We even have one you have met. Slow Ben lives down there. Shoot him an PM. I am of the opinion that it is like Venice in that it will not be around for a lot longer due to the rising sea levels. So if you have a chance to see it do so.

That's a good itinerary for two weeks - although you could probably spend a week in two of the cities and go deeper/off the beaten path in the two cities if money/travel is an issue. I would be hesitant to add on a fourth city (as three days of flights to get to Boston/Chicago/NOLA/NYC is already a chunk out of the two weeks).
From what you've said, I don't think that is an issue and do contact Slow Ben and Briar King. They'll know where to stay, what's good around this time of year and where the good eats are.
Due to this happening around the time we'll be in Chicago, I won't be free from work to wander the three hours down to NYC to meet you guys there, but if you give me an idea of what you'd like in terms of attractions/entertainment and food, I can point you to some places.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

New Orleans is fucking awesome, although I'm back in Illinois now. Although I can guarantee you the humidity that time of year is like nothing you've ever experienced.
If you're gonna go, shoot me a message, I'd be happy to tell you about the good stuff.

Omg. I've been away from the board for awhile and I come back to discover that I might be able to make a meetup! Awesome! I'm only in St. Louis. I suppose I should be more active these days.

OK I have a babysitter for this weekend. Sorry I haven't posted or anything, but life changing emergencies and all have kept me away. I have some hilton points so i think i can get one day covered at a hotel. Is miracle mile good? Any other plans? I'm now looking at arriving Saturday morning and leaving Monday Morning.

Magnificent mile is fine. The hotels are great. The trains from both airports go there. All of the museums are close by.

I have a bit of a question for those of you who have been to the city. I was thinking about reserving the party room at the Bad Apple. Because they have an awesome beer list and fantastic Burgers. However it is not downtown. It is up on the northside. It is fairly easy to get to from the Brownline roughly (2.25 per person and a 45 minute trip) and a couple of blocks walk. It is in a very nice area. Or you could take a cab (20 bucks in heavy traffic; Can share a cab).
Or the other option would be for me to find a place downtown. Something like Jake Melnicks.
I just want to try to get a room while there is still enough time. Thoughts?

Whatever place you think is best. I doubt most of us will have any problems with a cab or riding the downtown to browntown. Wait... what?

The Bad Apple is awesome, with an excellent selection of burgers and beer! You might also, if you're lucky, get to sit in a chair previously occupied by yours truly.

My attendance is looking more and more bleak. The common core roll-out is occupying a ton of my time and I can no longer vouch for being anywhere at anytime. At this point, it'll be pure luck if I'm anywhere around the Midwest at meet-up time.
Still hoping, but I'm less than 50% at this point.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....
