Having just finished GotM and seeing Lorn's actions I started wondering if she was actually completely sane. Okay, so some of her actions may have been sanctioned by the Empress, who may not also be playing with a full Deck of Dragons. Without dropping spoilers, is Lorn all there? What she intended to do was both dangerous and utterly stupidly insane.
She seems to care little for what goes on around her, all that matters is the end product. Sure, she took on Paran and Tool. But they were just a means to get something else put into play.

I think by the standards of a court of law, yes she's sane, but there are definitely cracks in her sanity that widen as the book goes along. Lots of trauma from her Mouse Quarter childhood that comes back up, naturally, as she's steeped in violence in this story.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

True she does have "issues" from her past. And they may influence her actions. Saying that is everything she did truly sanctioned by the Empress? Or did Lorn go slightly rogue on her? It makes for great reading though, trying to dig into the mind and actions of characters, Lorn being a case for some study.. One can certainly see why Lorn has problems with certain areas of the military - not giving spoilers away - but does she use that for her style of revenge, or is again down to the Empress? Will be to Deadhouse Gates in a few days, I hope.

That is the thing we don't know if what she was doing was some sanctioned by the empress and part of a bigger plan or if it was rogue. Given the nature of the empire it is also possible that her going rogue was part of a plan.

There was a whole scene early in the book, at the dinner with Tays and Dujek, where Tattersail puts herself at Lorn's mercy and Lorn chooses to be Adjunct, not revenge seeking Mouse survivor.

Pretty much everything after that is her mission to hunt down and kill Sorry, with some ambivalence about wiping out WJ's squad.

How does her sanity, after the dinner in Pale, come into question?

The real question is
"Is Laseen sane?"

because Lorn was mostly just following orders.

I feel like she is way to confident in her ability and really the ability of her sword.

The good news is that analysing the motives of the Adjunct like this suggests that you're approaching it in the right way to get a lot out of later books in the series. In my opinion.

Basically, you're asking the right questions :D

I think Lorn is damaged by her past, like everyone else in the series:) it shows a depth of character that makes her more interesting than she would be otherwise.
