I love this teaser trailer. Ligetti's music and the reveal of the truly immense scale of Godzilla - "Gods, what a monster!" indeed - give it an otherwordly, almost cosmic horror, feel.

I'm just happy he LOOKS like proper Godzilla from the original Japanese film. The design is as close to the original as one can get...and yeah, finally a Godzilla who is 20+ stories high.

A moody teaser, but very effective.

If this is as good as it looks, then credit to the studio for taking such a shot on a director whose only previous feature experience was a film that cost 500k and made 4mil (but was brilliant).

Looks great. I loved the monster scenes in Monsters.

I just hope they don't kill off 'Zilla in this one. I want him to smash up everything and then return to the sea.

(To await the arrival of an invading King Ghidorah, who sets about laying waste to everything before Godzilla wakes up for a giant slam down in the sequel.)

No matter what your opinion on CGI in modern cinema, the fact we get to see a monster movie like this is fucking awesome.

Holy holy shit this looks so awesome.

I've booked a day off work so I can go and see this, I just need to book the tickets.

It's a pretty bulked up new Godzilla, and he has slightly odd feet but I guess something that huge needs something more solid to stamp on things with.

I love the way the teaser trailer just showed Godzilla... now we have him fighting against a Muto, that looks a lot like Rodan, in true Godzilla style.

Which means a lot of the reactions and comments in the trailer before were more likely to have been referring to the Muto than 'Zilla. Also, the creation of Mutos means there might be more...

I am now not watching anymore clips until I see it on the 16th.

If you want to see the best yet though, look up Godzilla - Let Them Fight...

I'll post this in here too.

Saw Godzilla yesterday, and I really, really enjoyed it.

And for many of the same reasons that I liked 'Monsters.'

I've already seen some complaints that there was not enough Godzilla; but I really enjoyed the build up - it reminded me of the original King Kong, and Jaws too for that matter. (Although the wait in Jaws was more to do with technical issues, it actually made for a better film.) The build-up in Godzilla is nice because they could have gone all-out cgi from the start, but they chose not to. In fact, the cgi in the retro black and white footage works really well.

It does have its flaws; after a strong start the cast are basically left with little to do, and Edwards tries to avoid any movie cliches, to the point where you can almost see it. But, at the same time he manages to include homage to previous flicks like Jaws, Jurassic Park, and of course the original Godzilla. You'll know 'em when you see 'em. And, while I was watching the cast take a back seat during the second half, I remembered that this film is not about them. Previous Godzilla movies had a human story to back up the monster fights, and that's essentially all this is, it's just done in a more 'convincing' way. The US army weren't (for the most part) portrayed as trigger-happy loonies (their big plan was more than a bit stupid) and although the science and monster origins were a little fuzzy the scientists themselves weren't the awful caricatures from ID4 and Pacific Rim. The downside of that, however, is that they lack any sort of character.

But hey, it was about Godzilla. It was about a reboot. It could have been called Godzilla Begins.

Best bits... classic Godzilla moves. I'm not usually prone to cheering in the cinema, but certain bits got very close to a FUCK, YEAH!

Oh and the music score, especially towards the end, starts sounding a lot like that military march from the original movies...

I was disappointed. It's entertaining, and the spectacle is high-quality, but it's forgettable. Tries to appeal to too many people at once and ends up being middle of the road.

To be honest, I don't think Edwards does a good job at all of avoiding cliches... I actually made the point on another board after watching it yesterday that being too beholden to Jurassic Park and Jaws, while not having Spielberg's sureness of touch with tone and pacing, was its biggest problem.


Pacific Rim was much better, if only because it committed fully to cheese instead of being caught between that and TDK style intensity like this one was.

The pacing will be more of a problem on a rewatch, I think. The whole movie seems to be the set-up for the next one, tbh. But Pacific Rim? That's a bit harsh! XD

(Also, I really, really hate 3D glasses. They have glare off the screen and overhead lights, they fog up, they totally distract me. I would have preferred good old 2d but they only do 3D at Imax it seems.)

I absolutely loathe 3D in general and I probably would have enjoyed it more without, but yeah, like you I was forced to watch it thus (I could have gone with non-IMAX 3D, but I've found that the bigger screen seems to alleviate, though not remove, many of my problems with 3D).



And Pacific Rim was a cracking film.

Weird, I thought it was awful after about 15 minutes after the predictable start. And then it just followed Independence Day all the way. I can't think of one redeeming feature.

Saw it yesterday.

Visually and auditorially (is that a word?) stunning.

I liked the slow build-up and that the story didn't go the way I expected.

There were even some moments of good acting.

But...the human-level story is a mess. The film also contains what must be biggest of Big Dumb Moments ever:

Yes, the human part story was just hard to watch. Also, I dont know anything about nuclear warheads but I'm pretty sure they do not emit radiation prior to detonationn. The whole luring of the monsters would just not work. Other than that its as good as you can make a Godzilla movie. DO NOT see it in 3D. There was absolutely NOTHING making it 3D. The message to put on your 3D glasses was the best part of the 3D of that movie.

3d for me is poor as the focus is only ever on one small area of the screen, and the 3d bits likewise...negating the use of a big screen entirely.

I'd just prefer high resolution on a giant screen.

Hey, let's face it, the human part has almost always been terribad in Godzilla films, excepting perhaps the 2004 tribute self-wank and its ridiculously badass Captain Moustache...

Somebody needs to licence and do a live action 40k flick with Titans.
