Lets hope they leave it at that and bring back the art of a trailer, the joy of seeing the best bits in a film for the first time in the cinema, not all over the tv in adverts.

This film has every last bit of a chance to rock. Them americans apparently took notice that fans didn't like their previous attempt at a Godzilla film, and this one is to be true® to the tradition of japanese films. I WANT IN NAO!
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again; because there is not effort without error and shortcomings; but who does actually strive to do the deed; who knows the great enthusiasm, the great devotion, who spends himself in a worthy cause, who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement and who at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly. So that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who know neither victory nor defeat.

But... but I liked the old Godzilla film. I mean by modern standards its pretty goofy (from what I remember) but it was a pretty cool monster movie.

There has never yet been a better GODZILLA, than the proper Japanese GODZILLA films.

But if the rest of Gareth Edwards movie looks like that trailer...oh boy it looks like we may have a chance!

I'd say the Millenium series' Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla and Tokyo SOS ultimately take the crown, I just love the concept of Kiryu as seen in those two films, absolutely love it. In general, while I used to be more of a Showa fan when I was a kid, after my recent rewatch (and for many, first watch) of the entire series I must say that Heisei and Millenium eras are far superior, maybe because I like the way darker atmosphere, maybe because the cinematography has become so, so much better over time. Biollante, Megagurius, Destroyah - these were very inspired in comparison to films coming out inbetween them that just copied/brought back old favourite villains...

I've got very high hopes for this.

My favourite goofy Godzilla film has to be the one with the Planet X people who can only be defeated by the noise of a 'Ladysafe' alarm (Invasion of Astromonster/Monster Zero). King Kong vs. Godzilla is also pretty classic.

I haven't seen any of these movies for a long long time, but I think Godzilla vs. Hedorah (the smog monster) gets a bad rap...it's got crazy psychedelic party scenes, it's got Godzilla flying backwards like Powdered Toast Man, it's got surprisingly disgusting deaths (for a Godzilla movie), it's got a genuinely dangerous villain with multiple stages/forms, and it's got a semi-sensical environmental theme. A real oddball entry.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

They do that from time to time, try something new(ish). Hedorah was my favourite as a kid (but then again my access to godzilla films was limited to what my local vhs rental had, which wasn't much), but it's a tad weird/naive sometimes in its writing. I think the worst rep it got was for the emergency superpower when Big G uses his breath to propel himself like a jet and fly... so yeah. It's still rather lighthearted compared to Heisei and Millenium series films.

Well, the director of Hedorah apparently got banned for life from directing with the company and it kinda ruined his potential career in that regard. Though he is executive producing the new one Apt posted, so I guess that's his revenge of sorts.

I liked the original movie - the black and white one. I mostly just remember the bit at the beginning with a family sheltering in their house during a colossal storm; listening to these massive footfalls and roaring out in the night. Then coming out in the morning to see these footprints and trail of destruction across the countryside.

The best thing about the '98 version was the poster with the massive foot and leg, with a helicopter alongside it. It was never that big in the movie though which was a bit of a rip.

Good trailer though (while it lasted)... I just love that distinctive Godzilla roar that sounds like shrieking metal.

This shriek is somewhat different, moreso than any of the shrieks to date as far as I can tell. But it's still definitely a Godzilla shriek.


Piece of trivia: the original shriek in the first film was apparently made using resined gloves on the strings of a contrabass.

Gods, what a phenomenal teaser trailer.

Like for real...the opening narration as the squad is falling trailing their ident smoke in red trails...down into a burning city...and then thePOV shot through the helmet lenses of Gojira himself...Wowza.
