" 'Son of Darkness,' he said, 'I have reconsidered-' "

When I first read this scene I gathered that his death had been decided earlier due to Hood's own approach and Rake's reaction, and just assumed that Hood's reconsidering was perhaps a fear of death or whatnot and then Rake not letting him finish the sentence by kindly making the decision for him, but reading on this seemed pretty unlikely because of Hood's rather elaborate plan that played out within Dragnipur. Are we not supposed to know what Hood was talking about or did I miss something?

Thanks, and sorry if this thread has been made before.

Personally I think it was Jaghut humor. It would be very like a Jaghut to make a joke in the moment of its own death. Even more funny when you consider the God of Death wanting to postpone his own death.

It must have been the sight of Dragnipur. It would make anybody weak kneed.

On a more serious note, I think SE is just messing with our heads.
It is also in character for the author to leave some forward reference so that he can come back to it in the future. Like let's say Hood and Rake are having tea in the far away future.

Rake: "Btw Hodd! Why did you say that then?"
Hood: "I was just being funny!"
Rake: "Huh!"

I personally agree with the Jaghut humor theory, but if it's not that, I actually think it's sympathy for Rake...Hood's not reconsidering his own death, he's reconsidering Rake's ultimate plan. And Rake is like, nope, I'm doing it, I don't wanna hear any more arguments trying to convince me otherwise.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

That's a really good explanation.

Thanks, worry. I expected to receive theories rather than an exact answer but that one makes perfect sense.
