Apologies if this has been asked before, but I just finished Gardens and had a question. When Topper and Paran entered the Imperial Warrren, Paran saw something that made Topper nervous but was never explained. Here's the passage:
"On a number of occasions they came upon places where the ash embankments had been disturbed, as if by the passage of something large, shambling; and wide, slithery trails led off into the gloom. In one such place they found a dark encrusted stain and the scatter of chain links like coins in the dust."
So yeah. What was that?

The Imperial Warren and its realm doesn't exclusively belong to the Malazans. In fact, their "nominal control" of it is in name only. There's a reason no one else uses it: it's dangerous.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

We don't know, but as HD said, the warren has things travelling around and many of them are less than friendly.
