split screen co-op is it dead?

Me and my wife enjoy playing games together, but recently we have noticed that fewer and fewer 'multiplayer' games support local play split screen co-op.
Are developers no longer catering towards casual players that enjoy playing while in the same room?
If anyone knows if any good split screen co-op games they can recommend id love to hear them.
No Lego ones as ive got them all and completed them.

Borderlands and Left 4 Dead are the only two I've ever played split screen. Oh and just about any COD game.

Borderlands 2 is a fantastic game. It's devoured most of my time in the last few weeks. The game has filled the action-loot game void in my heart that Diablo 2 left behind.
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

As far as I understand the reason why split screen co-op has vanished is because it's more hardware intensive to do a split screen than just a regular image. Here towards the end of the console era, at least, the big games are focused on visuals and performance. That means co-op gets sacrificed.
You might also speculate that it's a lot more lucrative to force people to play co-op over the internet because then they have to buy two or more copies instead of just one.
Games that you can play split screen on a console I can recall would be:
Resistance 3
The Gears of War games.
Army of Two
Resident Evil 5-6
And of course lots of Nintendo titles.

Portal 2 is really the only game I've played that is perfect for split screen co-op, well that and going way back to when I played Mario Kart on one of the Nintendo platforms. The other games (such as Borderlands 2) are just easier to create a "party" in XBL or PSN.

The big games have been consistently focused on visuals and performance to the sacrifice of most everything else, it's a CONSOLE generation, lol! (Only mostly sarcastic)
I've always been disappointed at the lack of split-screen titles available. It is more resource intensive, that's true, but for many games it would be pure awesome to be able to split-screen. I know that not all that many people have them, but "gaming days" and LAN parties are awesome fun...and really, being able to have multiple people on one console is the only sensible way to do things. Having more than one console isn't *too* high an ask; at the very least, we've always been able to scrounge together two or three for marathon sessions, the really issue is the number of *televisions* required. If you want four people to play locally, that location needs to have four TVs? Seriously, wtf? I'd rather take my entire desktop PC and a monitor than try and transport a decent-sized television and gaming console, just to do something I could do online without the transport hassles. It would be easier.
It's always a disappointment for my friends and I when a game doesn't have local split-screen co-op, or worse, not even split-screen MP. It's just not common enough, sadly, and I think it's a part of the market which gets largely neglected for reasons of profit, laziness, and ignorance. After all, game developers tend to test their games in dedicated rooms, which always have enough consoles and TVs; not in their living rooms at home.

Sorry forgot to say, on the 360. Have a Wii but i cant stand the system.
The last game we found co-op was Rayman Origins but thats it.
I remember the days of playing games on the PS2 and original xbox playing games like Time Splitters and Quake.
I may try convince the wife to play borderlands, but as ive not played it before is it first or 3rd person? I ask as she has trouble with FPS. (weird motion sickness and disorientation from it)

Tried Halo. Not really her cup of tea.
She prefers platformers but can sometimes get her playing other games.

Haven't played it (and don't think it is a split screen game), but Mount Your Friends is supposed to be a hoot and a holler.
