With hindsight it isn't nearly as big a deal as it turned into. It was mostly bad timing and coincidence.

You did it in a game set in feudal Japan, where and when suicide for honor was fairly ingrained in the culture. (It wasn't just Japan by the way. "Falling on your sword" may be a phrase today but it was a very real expectation in many western cultures as well.)

(And Alkend's kill order on Barghast is (will succeed) because at the moment it will. Barghast hasn't submitted a guard order. Though I really doubt that he'll guard Alkend seeing as how he got the "did not succeed" on his previous guard on Alkend.
