In Britain we have something called a Car Boot Sale were you grab old stuff from around your house and sell it to random strangers instead of throwing it away. I did one yesterday with my Mum. She picked me up at 06.50 (ON A SUNDAY!) and we went to West Kirby Football Club. Here is the site http://www.merseymagazine.co.uk/anniversary-page/

My intention is to raise money so that I can put a deposit down on a mortgage, we (my wife and I) are both saving each month so any extra income goes towards that.

We put up a decorators table and laid our goods out on top. My stuff included 4 fantasy series/trilogies. I had Prince of Nothing trilogy, Mistborn Trilogy, Game of Thrones first 5 books and Darren Shan's 12 books Saga in the form of 4 books. I sold two out of the four, have a guess which two. I sold each set for £7.50, how much of a bargain is that?

I took a shed load of DVD's, sold them at £2 each or 3 for £5, all in good condition and some only seen once. In my opinion the funniest one I sold was The Rules of Attraction to some old man with this cover..

Spoiler

I sold Kung Fu panda 1 and 2 to a Grandpa who was looking to entertain his Grandchildren. I took some silicone and garden tools from work, which we supply Hardware stores with, and sold some of that.

My mum said she was going to throw a load of stuff out, bits of make up and ornaments that have been in the cupboard. She had a box of stuff with 10p items, a box with 50p items and some random things like miniature Winnie the Pooh picture frames and a nodding dog ornament.

We sold most of what we took and made £80. Very enjoyable day, we stayed until 11:30 so we didn't spend all day there.

Have any of you done one of these? What sort of things did you sell?

The biggest surprise was that early morning, before the buyers arrived, a boy was unloading his lego from his mum's car by the bagful, the hosts and the other sellers gathered around and said how much for the lot. They ended up buying it all from him for £180, I don't know how many bags full there were but if you own a lot of lego, you could sell it for a lot of money.

ha ha, this reminds me of my youth...

I remember a few times getting up at the crack of dawn with my folks to go to one of these. I sold loads of GI Joe and Transfomers toys and got about £35. When you're 13, £35 is a LOT of money...especially 18 years ago!! :-)

it was also around the time I got into gangsta rap and i remember getting a Cypress Hill and a House of Pain cd for about £1.50 each...

Good Times!!!

I bought GotM at one of those sales back when I was 14, so I have a very fond opinion of these. Never sold anything myself there, though. I try not to buy anything I don't really need, so I've got no stuff to spare. My mom loves these sales, though, and sometimes I tag along. Good for buying books and stuff I don't really want to spent money on.

I have some action figures that I have not opened since my brother bought them for me as a joke. There seems to be a lot of families that go to these sorts of things. Next time I am taking some toys.

yeah if I was going around one of these and I saw some fantasy books I haven't read then I would definitely snap them up. I will definitely shop at one this year.

Here we call it a flea market I believe. I used to work booths during the summer with my mum and dad when I was a kid. They where teachers so had the summers off here and thought that it was a good way for the family to earn a few bucks and spend quality time. I could always find old books and old comics for a steal.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

I used to be a fan of the resale economy, but while i'll cheerfully buy someone's 2nd hand books and the odd article of awesoke vintage clothing or high-end jeans, I've totally given up on making any sort of worthwhile profit from this sort of garage/porch/rummage/church/thrift sale, as we call them here in Canadaland. Bottom line is the $ gained isn't worth my time/effort/gas/chances of becoming a serial killer when someone tries to bargain down something priced at $0.25.

I have a box in the basement that books i don't want to keep go into. Another one for clothes, knickknacks, unwanted stuff, crap, bad gifts etc. When either box is full, it goes to a charity resale place.

we call those "yard sales" where I'm from, the term flea market is often reserved for prestigious organized affairs where one may purchase knock-off purses, leather goods, firearms, and local produce within 10 feet of one another.

also, ice cream and corn dogs for the kids
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

Good luck trying to get "car boot sales" as an additional source of income on a mortgage application form... ;-)

We have already been accepted for a mortgage but they say we need to raise the deposit.

I'm sure there's a criminal precedent for this.

Happened to me the first time. They said they didn't think I could afford the offered repayments but I only needed 900 quid to make it OK. Turns out it was a £5 difference. Cos, you know, I have an extra £900 knocking about but an extra fiver a month is far too expensive...
