I would like to hear some opinions before I buy myself a tablet like the Kindle Fire or Nexus. I already have a laptop and refuse to spend $700 on the iPad. I will use mainly for idle browsing, email, some apps for me and my kid to play with, etc. maybe a little work if things get desperate.
Thanks, I'd rather trust you guys than random fools on amazon.com

I absolutely love my ipad, and I think they do come cheaper than $700 depending on memory and Internet connectivity stuff. That said, I've recommended the Kindle Fire to family and friends and they all seem to love it. Basically, it does everything you want it for, for a fair price.

I've got a Nexus 7 and its pretty good. I dont use it too much anymore since I got a Nexus 4 (I bought the Nexus 4 because I really liked the 7) but when I did, everything worked nicely. OS works smoothly ,browsing the interwebs and watching vidoes and movies was great. Battery life is also good and I think its the perfect size to read books on it. One of the main reasons I bought it was for using it as a gps unit in the car as its not too large. Myself, I wouldnt want anything bigger than a 7" tablet.

The only thing that I have to say is kinda crappy is how theres only one speaker so when you watch something horizontally the sound is emitted from that side only.

I also got this Cover/Keyboard for it that works pretty well although I havent actually had the need to use it.

Quality and specs of tablet vs price is in my opinion worth it.
No Touchy.

You live anywhere near a Walmart? They have a 14 day no questions asked return policy. Use it to test drive a couple.

it's probably too late, but people really should get Nexuses, Nexi? over kindle or whatever because the kindle is weirdly restrictive on what apps you can put on it unless you go out of your way to find workarounds. there's a few other tablets on the market as well and I'd usually pick them over kindle too.

I was given a kindle fire and while it's alright, is not what I would have chosen and the interface is often clunky.

Cool. I'll feel free to hijack the thread then. :p

(HO doesn't trust amazon reviewers and I avoid reading the macrumours forums because they carry the fanboi to religious extremes over there.)

I'm going the other way. Getting a MacBook Air. I live 80 miles from the nearest place that stocks one so does anyone with an 11" care to comment on it? I dearly loved my 12" powerbook back in the day. And a friend let me borrow his 13".

The 11" just seems to close to the ipad in size. Might as well just get an external keyboard for it.

There's something to be said about a tablet that just works without a keyboard. it's super easy for the bopping around the internet, videos, short emails and reading books. a keyboard actually makes it worse.

now, if you are regularly writing stuff or using office style programs or transferring files, go for the laptop lite (which is what the mac air is). I think that for those lucky few who have the options, having two of the three of a desktop/good laptop, a laptop lite/tablet and a smartphone solves just about everything.

granted, I am a person who spent more on grappling than I did electronic stuff over the last five years, so keep that in mind.

I used this website http://www.techradar...d-today-1079603 to get an idea about tablets, and in the end got a really good deal (almost 50% off) for the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity on ebay. I wouldn't have paid the full price for the thing because it is so expensive, even more than a good laptop, but I love that thing for the commute to work, listening to music/audiobooks at home - we don't have a tv, so I carry my transformer to wherever I am and watch movies/listen to stuff, has a nice feel, works well, broadband/4G, comes with kindle, netflix and other useful apps installed.

I have to admit I am a sucker for Asus, so I am somewhat biased, and really, I would have probably gone for a nexus (7 cos it's google asus) if I hadn't found the bargain. But I am glad I shopped around a bit because it's awesome!
