In the scene with three Orthen (Lizard-Rats) having their tails bound together, where Corabb breaks their necks in mercy it is suggested that these creatures become smarter, the more there are present.
At the very end of the book, I think Gessler or Stormy suggests something like about the Nah Ruk, mentioning something like that they are mindless beasts on their own?
Together with the mystery of the Orthen following the Bonehunters through the wastes, and the Bonehunters eating them without understanding what the Orthen themselves are living on, could it be possible that these Orthen are a breed of Nah Ruk, bred especially to scout and spy on the enemy? Where have the Orthen been mentioned before this?
They always had a cranium rat vibe about them (a dungeons & dragons Planescape monster that also gets smarter the more there are).

The Orthen are mentioned in MT as having been bred by the K'Chain for food purposes, so I'd assume since the Nah'ruk have also been bred by the K'Chain for serving them, just on a different scale, certain similarities in the way they went at it and what they ended up creating are not surprising.
