I really don't know how to feel about this Both groove-messing or happy-inducing (or maybe neither)

I've had a number of things happening in my life lately that I've really not know how to feel about. Being the generous and including gentleman that I am, I desperately want to tell you people, my bestest and onliest friends in the whole wide world, about it, but I just didn't know which thread to put it in (because, let's face it, there are only two threads that count in this forum). So here's a thread for all those times when neither the what's messing with your groove-thread or what's making you happy-thread does it. Here goes:
I've just booked my flight for London next week, and I really don't know how to feel about this. On the one hand it'll be good to get out of the daily grind. It's a work trip, mind, but I haven't been out of the country since I did the same trip last year. The people I'll meet down there are fun and the project is about as interesting as it gets in my job. But on the other hand I really don't have time for this. Travelling to London is 6 hours flight each way, meaning two workdays will go to just travelling. And, being the introvert that I am, I'm going to be exhausted when I get back home Sunday night, with but a nights sleep to recuperate before I start working Monday morning again. Which, because I've got shit loads to do and I've elected to travel to London for the better part of a week, will be a very long day - as will the rest of the days of this month.
So there you are. Consider yourself informed of my terrible but also good affliction. Now go on you people as well. Update us on all those things that no one really cares about because we're all just pixels on a screen.

Avoid the obnoxiously dry sandwiches Britons seem to enjoy so much.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

This about sums up how I feel about business travel! Bryn, can't you get Time Off In Lieu for the off-duty hours you spend travelling? That sometimes makes things better. My business don't offer it so I try to travel in business hours only.
I might have to go to Saudi Arabia in Autumn. Not looking forward to that one at all!

No extra time off for me, and I don't need either. I've got a month left on my contract and I've got a week worth of overtime hours to take out (we don't get paid overtime, just time off). The problem isn't the trip - I volunteered to do it and I'm looking forward to it. I'm not looking forward to all the stuff I got to do when I return, however. Shit's already falling apart as is, without me going AWOL for a week.
(So to accurately sum up: "woooooooh! Going on a trip on business dime! Waaaaah! I don't want to return to everyday life! Ever!")
And I would marry the job that sent me to Saudi Arabia. Nevermind that bloke you've been with for years now - marry you're job, woman! Don't care why it's sending you there - it may be to help them develop a new and improved formula for ZyklonB - you're still going to fucking Saudi Arabia!

Hmm, London you say. Hmm, must be nice to have business trips to places like London.
I had a business trip last week. It took me to a remote work camp between Meziadin Junction and Bell II. If you haven't heard of those places, it's not surprising. I would expect 99% of the people in BC have never heard of either one. In fact, most commonly available maps of BC only show the bottom two thirds of the province, because there is pretty much nothing but wilderness in the top third.
So while I am in the same boat as far as not being able to afford the time away, I can't help but think that business trips to London would be a pretty cool thing.

My next trip looks to be either near Hay River of Fort MacMurray, joy.

I fly east coast US > UK several times a year. Don't have any solid gold nuggets of advice except avoid US airlines if at all possible. Air France has champange, croissants, and cognac; SWISS has freshly baked bread; Lufthansa has drinkable beer, all gratis. AA or Delta will charge you for the honor of having one of their surly cave pig FAs throw a warm diet coke at you (umm.....I asked for sprite)
I used to worry incessantly about the company going to hell while I was away, but have given up on stressing. Nothing you can do about it. Yeah, you'll be tired Monday morning, so what . Do what you can, then go home and watch Family Guy. Wake up Tuesday morning (4 AM Tuesday morning!) refreshed and renewed. Or grumpy. In my experience co workers will buy the jet lag excuse for up to three days. Make the most of it.
Oh, and duty free is much, MUCH better in the US. Buy all your booze/cigarettes/Rolexes on the outbound flight.

I was pretty happy with Air New Zealand when I went down to that part of the world. Not flown Emirates.
