He's 6'5 and a Karate instructor. Every time I look at him I think "Kalam".
If you don't believe me, here's his centre's photo stream. http://www.flickr.co...hapkidocollege/
I shouldn't have to tell you which guy I mean.

The cool thing is, that Hapkido is a bad ass martial art, no forms or BS, just practical hands on stuff. It was developed by the Korean secret service, and would be perfect for an assasin.

In this picture, the technique is off:
http://www.flickr.co...ege/4990591939/
The placement of the opponent's (uke's) arm is okay. However, what you want to be happening is to put their hand on your shoulder, your hands clasped just below their elbow and a space in between your body and their elbow. The hands of the person doing the technique (tori) are too low and this is turning into a crappy shoulder lock instead of a true straight armbar that can immobilize or break a limb very quickly. The idea is to pull the elbow towards your body and to create a "tap or snap" straight armbar situation.
It would look something like this: http://lh5.ggpht.com....JPG?imgmax=512
If you want the shoulder lock, it's better to do a chicken wing as it's known in wrestling (or half nelson as a lot of non-grappling people know it). Or an omoplata.
Man, I can't wait to be back to BJJ in five months.

True, however depending on the setup, it COULD have been a shoulder lock looking to drive the attacker face first into the ground.
judging by the defender's leg position (what can be seen of them) this might have started from standing and the defender did a spin and drop to take the attacker down via the shoulder.
Having said that though, if that IS what happened then defender should have kept standing, or at least dropped one of his knees into the base of the attackers' shoulder instead of placing it at the side like he's done. from there locking/breaking the elbow against the defenders' own thigh would be an easy option too.
meh. Link was dead :(

@amphibian
That is pretty nonsensial criticism, as you do not know what the person on the picture wants to do, if it is the final position and where he might be moving (there are some possibillities from this position). It is obviously not an armlock (though I dont like the one you linked either) but if he shifts his body weight forward he will definitely hurt the other guys shoulder and I have to agree withe Cocoreturns that this looks like the result of a take down (which may or may not have involved an armlock).

Yeah, I think the criticism is a bit unfair as we don't actually know what he's trying to do for certain. To me, he's levering the arm to lock the shoulder, not the elbow. I've been taught a similar variation where you lever with the back of your shoulder, like this (1:23:55):
Looking at the other photos, everyone seems to drop at least one hand when they kick and where that guy is kicking at the pad, he's wide open with his hands right behind him.
On topic, though, that is a very Kalam-ish guy.

The original poster references the guy as a Karate instructor - and in Karate the pulling back of the arm when you kick is quite common as it generates a little extra impulse. Not to say that I would recommend such reckless behavior
Also, the people hown to practice the techniques dont have particulary high graduations and the guy not wearing a Gi is probably a complete beginner, so some mistakes are not too unusual.

He does, but the OP would be wrong, as the guy's a hapkido instructor. But you're right, everyone has to start somewhere and can't be expected to be perfect straight away.

IT'S JUST AN AWKWARD HUG GUYS JEEZ STOP OVERTHINKING THINGS
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.
