[High House Dark]

So - who else has been following along with NBC's Hannibal?

I personally LOVE the show, but am terrified NBC will make the horrible decision to cancel it, and then who knows where it will go. The casting is great, and the general cinematography is superb. I do think a few scenes/moments are "over-acted" and a little more dramatic than necessary (i.e., first few episodes where every character seemed so concerned about "WHAT IF WILL GETS TOO INVOLVED???" and then no one really seems to do anything about it - I felt this was at a point where we weren't quite attached to Will yet, so it didn't really matter to me at the time).

But overall, it's a new fave, and now I'm sad that its future looks fuzzy.

Also, an embarrassing admission, but I've never read Red Dragon. Thoughts from those who have read it and are watching the show?

Mikkelson is fantastic, though a lot of the suspense is forced, as we (the viewers) all KNOW he's a b******

Agree that everyone else seems to be overacting at times, but again I think that's down to Mikkelson being so understated and reserved with the character he's playing (which I think is right. there's an air of caged animal about him in the show).

Essentially he's showing most of the others up as a result.

Yes yes yes, this makes a lot of sense, and I agree.

I do have to wonder if there are those few people who are so not aware of pop culture (or just, for some reason, have never crossed paths with any Hannibal lore) who might randomly watch the show and just be like, "........... wait WHAT HE EATS PEOPLE, WHY DO PEOPLE LIKE THIS, WHAT IS GOING ON, WHY IS IT PORTRAYED SO CASUALLY?" Haha XD

Speaking of how Mads does Hannibal so well, and the show is truly centered on him, I love this fan's analysis of the homme fatal and Hannibal.

I'm thoroughly enjoying this show and really really hoping NBC renews it, tho the numbers are borderline.

The producers and writers have clearly read and seen all the Hannibal books/flics and cherry-picked the best parts to great great effect.

Mikkelson is perfect in the role, but beyond that the way they dress and style and direct him just nails the Hannibal character in a way that the viewer can be horrified yet cheer for him. And i want his suits/shirts/ties. All of them. Also his office. And possibly his kitchen. No, definitely his kitchen.

The Will Graham character is being well handled, even if they did give him a 'magic empathy' thing that makes little sense, it's well played and explains why everyone is so reluctant for him to step back from cases even when he's going utterly bugnuts.

I've also really enjoyed the various serial killers to date. Each case is nicely staged and impacts on Will and co in clever ways, such that even if there isn't a big shoot out or stabbyfeste at the end of the episode, it still holds my attention (the recent totem pole killer was an example of this). Some of these have also included really nifty nods to the films and books, notably the angels.

Part of me hopes not though, or they at the very least flesh out her character more before giving her the axe (oven?), because otherwise I'll just think FRIDGING THE LOVE INTEREST, HOW ORIGINAL /sarcasm. Of course, that trope is particularly appropriate for this series, hehehe.

that she'll die, or at least that Hannibal will kill her- he only kills people he has contempt for or who've disrespected him somehow, and if he doesn't like her per se he definitely respects her. Unless per his twisted relationship with Will he decides that she's leading him on and kills her for it.

Regarding the renewal, apparently if NBC don't, there are at least two other companies (including one cable one) who are interested. The cable one almost certainly being Showtime to fill the Dexter slot. Either way, its prospects are helped by being an internationally co-financed production that means the US network isn't taking all of the hit moneywise.

the My Girl trainee who he kills - but his patient already had his contempt right from the start, when he left the snotty tissues on the table. Miriam was pure necessity, but then Will notes that there's the reason she vanished, rather than being displayed.
So yeah, maybe Allana will stumble onto Hannibal's real nature. But I don't think he'll eat her. But possibly he will, and then feed her to Will...

I'm curious about Gillian Anderson and her backstory with a patient. Seems to me that Hannibal knows something there. At first I thought maybe it was him who attacked her, until they said that person died. Maybe Hannibal killed him.

Mirriam was my original example tho i couldn't remember her name. It's also interesting that he's using her recording and body parts to mess with Crawford, since that sort of psychological taunting is far more blatant than the mind-games he's up with with everyone else.

I thouigh Gillian Anderson was an excellent casting choice and i really like the notion of Hannibal having a psychiatrist. Also fascinating was the fact that she knows his persona is a mask.

I like the notion too, especially since it lends more to its realism - it's basic psychiatry 101 to have your own, since you ARE listening to others people's (sometimes horrendous) problems everyday. Who knows if Hannibal insists on keeping her to lend to his image... or does he need it? It's probably more part of his image he's so concerned about? Especially with that line about how he's protective towards her.
