Blood and Bone
Orb, Sceptre, Throne
Stoneweilder.

Those are all malazan books right? Is there any others by Esslemont I should know of that are involved in the Chronology?

NIGHT OF KNIVES.
Best read between Midnight Tides and The Bonehunters.

Uhm i think it's set after the whole main series but i'm not sure (still haven't read it).
Apart from the 10 main books, we have:

-ICE's novels of the Malazan Empire
Night of knives: Set between the prologue of Gotm and the 1st chapter (best read after Midnight tides)
Return of the Crimson Guard: Set after The Bonehunters
Stonewielder: Set after Return of the crimson Guard
Orb, sceptre, throne: Set after Toll the Hounds
Blood and Bone

-Tales Of Bauchelain and Korbal Broach : a satyrical spin-off series composed of these Short stories:
Blood Follows
The Lees of Laughter's end
The Healthy dead
Crack'd pot trail
The Wurms of Blearmouth

-The Karkhanas trilogy, set a few hundreds of thousands of years before the main series.. only the first volume, Forge of Darkness, is already published

The Toblakai trilogy (?) : Exact title and settings currently unknown.. to be released after the Karkhanas trylogy

Ahaha now that you know the titles, yo should follow Drek's order... she's much more of an expert than me.

Just put Stonewielder after Toll the hounds and Orb sceptre throne between Crippled god and Blood and Bone

Hope that's not coming out too confusing

Read order:

GotM > DG > MoI > HoC > MT > NoK >BH> RG > RotCG > TtH > SW > DoD > TCG > OST > B&B

Erikson books in blue
Esslemont books in green

That was D'rek's order in case you lost track of it. I've followed that order and it works very well.

Yes, I just looked it up and re- organized my order. However, she left out the BoneHunters...so i stuck it between Reapers Gale and Return of the Crimson Guard...? Is that where it is supposed to go?

Nah, it goes right before RG. I added that into the list when I quoted D'rek. I know there was a revised version somewhere, but I've lost where so I just threw it in there for you.

Nope, BH is Erikson's. Right now Esslemont has 5 books out (NoK, RotCG, SW, OST, and B&B ).

Also, as I try to read it try to read it in such a way, that I can ask questions and make comments that any reader would. I try to make it so that anybody who is reading the book for the first time, and has questions, will see those asked. If that makes sense? haha.

As Abyss pointed out, you probably should focus on your own experience while reading, and your enjoyment will carry over into what you post.. Also, I think conveying enjoyment with these books is the best thing you can offer someone who's unsure about whether to read this series or not.

And again, it is considered kind of a consensus that your personal enjoyment and experience with these books is something of a cipher to the whole series.

Best way to read:

Gardens of the Moon
Deadhouse Gates
Memories of Ice
House of Chains
Midnight Tides
Night of Knives - ICE
The Bonehunters
Reaper's Gale
Return of the Crimson Guard -ICE
Toll the Hounds
Dust of Dreams
Stonewielder - ICE
The Crippled God
Orb, Sceptre, Throne - ICE
Forge of Darkness (book 1 Kharkanas)
Blood and Bone - ICE

This order keeps everything as spoiler-free as possible and more or less works chronologically. If you feel like reading the ICE books are distracting you from Erikson's story, feel free to save them until after you've completed The Crippled God. There are a few things in his books that factor in, but nothing that will ruin the experience if you save them for later.

Also, it's not necessary to read Forge of Darkness (first book of Erikson's new prequel trilogy) before Blood and Bone, but it works well due to a few world elements and some of the Malazan universe's lingo.

I wanted to ask, Steven Erikson is proving himself masterful. But how is Esslemont?

NoK was a letdown for me, but I'm reading RotCG now, and it's almost like an SE book. (Incidentally, regarding read order, I'm just following the same order as the novels section of the forum, which I believe is publication order. That's working for me...)

GotM's 'start in the middle' thing blows many many readers' minds, and then compounds it by not explaining everything in a nice calm orderly 'wise wizard breaks it all down for the ignorant farmboy' kind of way.

The other week I was listening to my Harry Potter 5 audiobook in the car. (Yes, I'm a nerd for YA fantasy fiction.) Attached File  hp2.gif (1.49K)

Anyway, after reading 7 SE novels, Rowling's LONG conversation between Harry and Dumbledore at the end of the book sticks out like a sore thumb. Good grief, they were talking when I started my drive and they were still yakking at the end of my 30 minute trip. Here's a nice, tidy explanation for everything that happened in the book, for all the dummies out there. For me, SE's "always show, rarely explain" writing style is a breath of fresh air.

Im in Chapter 10.

I think I read about this previously but I brushed it off. What is the relationship between Anomander Rake and the Crimson Guard (what the heck is the crimson guard?) and Calasan Brood? They allies? Friends? Enemies? I would really like to know the relationship as I move forward.

I'm gonna be pretty basic since you're still making your way, but Caladan Brood is a warlord (leading an assortment of northern Genebackis native peoples/townsmen/tribes), the Crimson Guard are a mercenary group, and both are opposed to the Malazan expansion into Genebackis. Anomander Rake and the Tiste Andii are a somewhat later addition to the resistance, though at the point of the siege at Pale they've already been fighting a few years as well. So in terms of the Malazan invasion, they are all resistance allies. In terms of their actual relationships to each other, it's complicated, but you'll get plenty more info as you go.

anomander rake is the most badass character you will ever meet in the series, a couple other characters come close but rake is still the coolest.
