Anyone watch the premiere?

Anyone agree it was boring and predictable?

I really wanted to like this, but aside from a semi-decent opening fight (that highlights one of the key disadvantages of bringing an ax to a swordfight) and sheild maide Lagertha/Katheryn Winnick (predictably but stylishly savagely) beating the crap out of two mouth-breathing moron would-be rapists, i found the entire premiere to be predictable and overloadd with talking/exposition instead of showing.

Perhaps the comparison is unfair, but History semi-marketted this as Game of Thrones with Vikings, and the contrast between how each series worked to grab an audience with its premiere was pretty stunning, and not in Vikings' favor.

Will stick around for another episode or two, but was hoping for more.

I liked it. I had no idea it was a norm series though...I was expecting norm History programming. This is the 1st I'm hearing about it trying to be GoT. How many epi is it suppose to be?

3 books then a 5 year break for the 4th. :(
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

Interestingly, most of the advance reviewers say the first ep was slow and then it improves a lot.

Makes me wonder why History didn't do a 2hr premiere.

This is disappointing to hear. It got a lot of advertisement before it launched, and I was really looking forward to it. I'll still end up watching it to have my own take on it... I got rid of my T.V though... is it on Hulu/Netflix or anything like that?
I still heart Goodkind.

They had episode 2 up early on the website. I just checked and the same goes for 3, which is a cool system. I'm actually going to watch it now on my ipad.

It's entertaining, but I feel they should have cut a deal with Bernard Cornwell for a mini series based on his Saxon stories.

There are vikings in the show, although the accent sound horrible, they got axes and they are burning churches/monasteries, Whats there not to love?

But Abyss, if you don't keep watching, how will know in what way the aliens were involved?

Shit is going down now. I bet if it were a HBO series Ragnar would have given the earl a good old blood eagle.

Stuck with it.. barely.... i think the 'next ep' blurbs were the only thing keeping us going, but the raid on the town was good fun especially the shield wall, Rollo's almost-betrayal was nicely done, and the Earl finally making his move against Ragnar, while frivolously silly in motive, was suitably bloody and finally finally got shit moving. If it keeps improving like this, i'll stick with it.

...if only for the aliens.

I watched the currently-released eps based on Graablick's comment in the GOT thread. Was going to post about it there, but thought there might be a thread over here, so here I am. Just wanted to say that so far I am totally bored. It's like there's no plot at all, very little character development (though dude who plays Ragnar certainly has a good beserker look to him), and I agree with Abyss that it is predictable so far. Oh, the Earl is dead now, what to do? Oh, traitor brother will shake things up! So now the next several episodes are predictable and there's no hint of anything else interesting that might happen. I will probably keep watching it just because it's something to do while waiting for GOT to show up on the internet etc. but I'm bored. Which sucks; it's a great concept for a series but it needed better writers.

I am sad so say that I agree with you, this is a series I really want to love, but I hope season 2 will prove better. It's still has potential since it's based on Vikings.

Yep. Case in point, last night's ep... the fight with the Earl was well done, as was the funeral (that tall old lady who played Angel of Death should appear in every fantasy show ever), and there was something poetic in Siggy knifing her daughter's fat old husband cuz hey, that alliance was certainly done with...

...but then it seemed like they hammered five or six eps of events and character development into one just to advance to the next raiding season and reboot the conflict with the English. The Ragnarok scene, cool as it was, could have been so much more. The entire winter passed with one whiny comment from Ragnar's kid. And the priest's entire roles seems to be to stand around looking mildly interested and prompting info-dumps.

Also, last time we saw brother he was being tortured by the Earl. Next time he's standing with the crowd for the fight with some nifty scars. WTF, they carved up his face and then just let him go???
Also, while at times i like Loki, his giggle and hug himself thing is getting old.

I want to like this show, i'm even trying to like this show, but they're not giving me much to work with here beyond about seven minutes of viking mayhem every third ep and a few cool bits of cultural history.
