You were pretty much the only one contributing there.

How long does one of these usually take you anywho?

Nice! I like the overall color scheme too.

Is the chin meant to be so small? otherwise, I'd say scooch it over a little to the right, and perhaps flip your canvas to double check proportions. :)

This one took around 2 hours,
the ones in the 10 minute thread, up to an hour.

I think the chin got lost in the shadow. I did a lot
of canvas flipping, but I was mainly focusing on crooked eyes :)

Oh god, with the 3/4 view, I ALWAYS have trouble with the eyes. ALWAYS.

this is great CN! you definately need your own thread man. you churn em out fast! It's inspiring really.

On topic, Is it just me that thinks trull had to have had moderately good looks? Like a grey guy who looks like whatshisname-guywhoactedasloki, but bald?

I keep thinking 'well if seren hit it...'

I think he's got more of a Grizzin Farl vibe going.

Maybe, but he's too grumpy for Grizzin Farl.
Would have to give a grin and a mug of something.

Dunno, GF does have more sides than just being drunk. To me he looks more thoughtful than grumpy (though I totally see GF being grumpy, more than Draconus actually, as grumpy is a rather.. comical emotion).

That aside, this is probably your best portrait so far, the area around the eyes and nose is very well done. It just needs more exaggeration to really be looming. Or less beard. I know Draconus is described with a beard, but it would probably be less wild/unkepmt. Just my opinion, though.

Grumpy was probably the wrong word. I was trying to be irreverent/funny/amusing.
I think another angle would be the only way to get looming in to that portrait, maybe from a bit underneath.
A more groomed beard would probably make more sense, but ever since I saw the sketch Dolmen did a while back.
(and realised he had a beard) its how I've imagined him. With a giant fuck-off viking beard:)

I'm starting a Grizzin portrait now, we'll see how it turns out.

I think its a great look for draconus, a big ol bushy beard! But maybe needs to look more alien? I mean I'm thinking in terms of the Gods a few seem to change as they wish into whatever form they seem to think fits the time. I imagine draconus may 'edit' his image to suit his environment. To me that says less beard and maybe more ageless broodiness?

still regardless I have to agree with puck this is one of your best technique-wise

Compositionally, I think it's pretty solid (typical portraiture, so not much to really vary there), but I think your lighting needs to be adjusted as it's a bit muddied between foreground + background. For example, that light spot behind his head is around the same value as parts of his face, so it's a bit confusing. Then a large part of chest area is as dark as a lot of the background.

So what I mean is, I think it would be even better if you made either the fore- or background significantly darker or lighter than the other... if that makes any sense? It's a very strong piece and presence overall, so I like it and I like the mood.

I like the Drac pic as a piece of art, but nothing about it screams 'DRACONUS' to me tho the the beard and hair fit the image of a guy who just spent forever locked away in a bad place.
. In particular while you have the dark clouds in the background the light effect behind his head is almost halo-like which is sort of the opposite of something related to a god of night. Just my useless $.02 but perhaps smooth out his face and darken the skin, make the eyes less 'human'.

The TCG pic... i like the colouring ... the 'feel' is suitably desolate. We can't really see what the two smallest figures in the middle are doing. Some of the silhouettes towards the edges don't really look like people. Maybe bring it in closer?

OK, I've made some of the changes you all suggested.
Not completely sold on the eyes, but other than this,
I don't know how to make them less human without going to reptile eyes.
Whadda y'all think?

WAY cooler. Gives a nice note of darkness without blacking him out fully, and i think the eyes are perfect.

The necklace or armor or whatever he's wearing is a bit unclear or distracting tho'.

So, I could not shake the feeling that something was off, so I dug into the books and that's what I came up with regarding Draconus (leaving out most of the refs to how tall or broad-shouldered he is, as that's not the question).. Emphasis on certain words by me. There's lots of stuff about his personality that I find intriguing, but I'm going to spare you those walls of text.

Quote

MoI
The hooded head shifted slightly and Paran felt cold, unhuman eyes fixing upon him. '[...]'

tCG
[...] the black-haired warrior named Draconus […]

'[…]' He paused, scratched at the stubble on his jaw. '[…]' [That'd be almost directly after being released from Dragnipur, somewhere about page 35 of tCG..]

Draconus turned round, his eyes black as pools of ink. '[…]'

[...] Pale skin, chiselled features, black hair, depthless eyes. […]

His eyes shone like silvered pools at midnight, and there was, she [Killy] realized with a start, such beauty in them – with the darkness flowing round, falling like tears, but you can see how they could turn. You can see it. Such a terrible thing…

FoD
But Draconus did not work that way, and he met the eye of every soldier and every servant under his care. [...]

So, basically, less beard and more aristocratic features, BUT of course that's just my image of him.
