You guys are trying not to buy books, meanwhile I just accidentally bought a book that I already have. My resolution is to not get any more senile...

I've done that multiple times. last time I was returning a book like that i told the lady at teh counter "you guys should make an app that'll keep track of books I already bought from you so I don't make the same mistake". She told me "We get lots of people saying that"

I set a goal of 60 books this year.
The Witcher books
Red Knight - Miles Cameron
Blood Mirror - Brent Weeks ( need to finish)
Incarnate - Maark Abbot

I might try a re-read of some Dragonlance and/or Forgotten Realms books. I've had a bunch of them for years but I'm guessing they have not held up to how I remember them. If I'm proven right I'm going to get rid of them.
I plan on reading Oathbringer, The Core, Wexler's new book and the rest is up in the air for now.

Apart from DHL and comics, I've kept to my August pledge of reading only women/minority authors (18 books and counting so far), and want to see just how long I can continue that into 2018.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Two more books to go and I will have made my goal of 60 for the year. I am halfway through Borne by Jeff Vandermeer and House of Chains by Erikson so I shouldn't have a problem wrapping them up by the 31st. I still have to finish the last Witcher book and I have not finished Blood Mirror or read Red Knight like I planned but at least I will make my goal. I think I should increase my goal for next year to push myself to read more since my to-read pile is enormous.

I hit 60 a week or so ago. Might manage a few more before the end of the year.

I also vow -- on Salt Man Z's very reputation I swear this -- that I will not buy any books in 2018, solely concentrating on my TRP. If I fail in this, may it be a stain on Salt Man Z's name for all time.

Because of the costs of daycare, and prospective house buying....I will also attempt to not buy ANYTHING new this year (aside from the one book I purchased yesterday for fear it would go out of print), and just trudge through my already unwieldy To-Read pile...since books are my main "extravagance" and I have plenty of books in the TRP to occupy me for a year.

Getting books for my birthday form others that I request...is fine though. Just to give it a silver lining.

We will see how long I last. I hope to make it.

Three months, tops.
I'd even take decent odds on six weeks.

Actually, I largely stuck relatively closely to this. BUT....I have spent all year trying to only buy Kindle Sale books, or physical books I needed to complete collections/cover art (of Wilbur Smith's 4 Egypt books, I needed the final two and the covers had changed again so I feared mismatched covers down the road and bought them). The result was I THINK I've purchased about 6-8 books this year total (at least 3 of which were $2 kindle sales). So not bad for a goal of none...when I'm sure I bought like 20-30 in 2017.

My goal for 2019 will almost certainly be the same goal of none...but some stuff (KELLANVED'S REACH, and ANARCH [final Gaunt's Ghost's book]) are coming out in the new year and those will be unavoidable purchases....BUT...I've asked exclusively for Amazon and Indigo gift cards for X-Mas from family...so I might have some banked cash to buy those. We shall see.

The real big goal this year will be to go back to my Goodreads "to-read" list and start ticking off books from the start of that list (some of which have been there for almost 5 years now). With me making the move to Kindle, that should now be a distinct possibility.- While I got through a number of books on that list, it wasn't a particularly big number.

Overall, over-arching goal for the upcoming year is to reduce the number of purchased, unread books. While I've made somewhat of a dent on that front, I have about 25 SFF books on my shelves still unread- some from several years ago.( not counting any e-books, non-fiction books as well as books that were donated to my mom by co-workers because "oh, your son reads SFF? here, have some old books!") I'd like to curb my somewhat obsessive book-buying habit in 2019, at least until I get through at least 2/3s of those previously unread works (so like 15 books)

Moreover, although I was able to complete my Goodreads challenge of 60 books this year, I found myself picking thinner, UrbF more frequently then I may have done normally, because I knew I'd make "good time" with these. This detracted from my overall enjoyment somewhat, so I'll set a more modest goal of 48 this year, and hopefully I'll enjoy the process more.

That being said, let's make a list!

French Books
-Same as always, the first 2 Dark Tower novels

2020- "Let's try something new" Edition.

I finished 2019 on 51 books, but once again, a lot of the time I was compromising, going for quicker reads to meet this arbitrary quota.

The over-arching goal for 2020 is to read every single unread book currently on my shelves. This includes a number of door-stoppers like the MMPB of "Oathbringer" and "Shogun", as well as reading the first 2 Solar cycles, and those are pretty.... dense books.

So I'm setting my Goodreads goal to 40, and I'm not gonna bother listing all the books here now- I have a runnign tally on my desktop, and I'll add books to it I go on. I'm expecting I'll be done with the last volume of the "Traitor Son Cycle" before I go back to work on Tuesday, though, and I'll start the "real" count from there.

My good reads target is 60 again.

New mission this year is not to buy a new book unless I clear 2/3 off my TRP first.
And taking in at least 5 of the 'classics' I have on my shelf too

Effort. Stress. Planning.

Reading is supposed to be fun. You're not getting paid so why treat it like a job with performance goals?

54 books in 2019 for me including binge-reads of the Horus Heresy (six books to go before I get into the siege [mini?] series) and The New Jedi Order (all done). A bit of a chore on both fronts, rather than anything particularly enjoyable.

Note to self for 2020:
  • Re-read Jhereg through Athyra and then get through the rest. I have no idea why I parked this series. Was enjoying Taltos a lot.
  • Re-read Retribution Falls and The Black Lung Captain before going on to the last two Ketty Jay books. Does anyone know if there's more to come? Again, I have no idea why I stopped where I did.
  • Plenty of Alastair Reynolds.

Not Having any commute reading time basically killed my reading time. I read less than 20 books, I think.

Since the overarching goal for 2021 is "save money", I'm really gonna be working the "to read" pile (including the ebooks)

Got about 20 of those, and then we'll see.

I do count them, yes. The only things I subtract from my total are graphic novels and/or manga.

Maybe a mod could edit the title, so it better reflected the current use of the thread?

Checking my spreadsheet, I read 84 individual works of litterature in 2020, which is pretty good seeing as I had a period from spring to fall where I didn't read more than a handful of novels.

17 non-fiction books.

11 shortstories or books under 100 pages.

4 comics or graphic novels

38 of the books and short stories can be classified as sci-fi or fantasy

Shortest story on the list is a Tor original called Yellow and the perception of reality at 20 pages.

Longest book is House of Chains at 1022 pages.

-----

Now for some reading resolutions for 2021. This is basically just a list of books I have sitting on my shelves or in my Kindle that I've been meaning to read but just never get around to:

Mich Foley's two Wrestling books

Chris Jericho's second Wrestling book

Henrik Pontopidan's Lykke-Per (A fortunate man in English)

Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail - Meant to read this one during the American election.

China Mieville's Embassy Town

Tor Nørretrander's Mærk Verden

Frederik Strand's Uropatruljen - Big fat non-fiction book about an old police squad in Copenhagen, the police used as muscle.

David H. Wilson's Robopocalypse

David Wong's This book is full of spiders

Dan Abnett's Gaunt's Ghosts books

Jeff Vandermeer's Borne

Brandon Sanderson's Way of King's + the rest of the Stormlight Archive if I don't hate the first book.

Josiah Bancroft's Senlin Ascends/Book of Babel books

Seth Dickinson's Baru Cormant books

Steven Erikson's Rejoice and Willful Child books.

James Islington's Licanus Trilogy

N.K. Jemesin's Broken Earth Trilogy

Mark Lawrence's Red Queen's War trilogy

Mark Lawrence's Ancestor Trilogy

Alex marshall's Crimson Empire Trilogy

Hannu Rajaniemi's Jean Le Flambeur trilogy (I read the first two ages ago and have forgotten everything, I just remember it's awesome Sci-fi)

T.H. White's Once and Future King

Evan Winter's The Burning Books.

Let's see if I read half of this stuff.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I should also try to read some more Discworld books and get back into Ilona Andrew's Kate Daniels series.
