Sure, the poster looks like it belongs to a Dark Knight movie and the teaser trailer sounds like it stole its music from Inception but damn do I want to see this movie!

The full trailer is scheduled for release next week but a teaser trailer came out today. The trailer itself is a little poorly done but I suspect that's to avoid giving anything away (like soooo many trailers do these days).

Have a look -

Also, I know everyone is expecting Khan to be the bad guy in the new movie but my money is on it being Gary Mitchell - especially since seeing the teaser.

Although, I just saw the Japanese teaser trailer and now I'm not so sure...

Could be Garth of Izar.

What would be really cool is if they put the whole 'alternate reality' thing to use and somehow make it so the bad guy is Sam Kirk under the influence of the neural parasites.

Do you mean Gary Seven?

EDIT - no I forgot about Gary Mitchell. Yeah that makes more sense.

OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Nope. I can't see how he'd be the villian even with the alternate reality option.

If it is Mitchell, I reckon the ship emerging from water might be the USS Valiant (that would be awesome XD )

weeee, looks awesome!

Didn´t Abrams say he wouldn´t go Nolan-dark and gritty with the series, but rather keep it light and funny?

This does not look light and funny.

The Japanese teaser had a few seconds more of footage. The hands touching through glass alludes to Khan but I'm not convinced it isn't an intentional mislead. Alt reality or not, Khan would still be in cryogenesis so they would have to find him first which is why I think Mitchell is a good candidate for the villian.

However, the volcanic imagery could point to Elba II.....

This fangirl isn't sure what to fangirl out about! :)

I think the hand in the Japanese teaser is a quiet nod to WoK, but that Cumberbatch won't be Khan. He's fond of doing little nods to fans like that.

I'm with you on thinking it's Mitchell. It makes the most logical sense. Especially, because were I JJ, I'd not want to rehash Khan (the greatest of the existing films), but rather blaze my own trail with another known character and give that a new spin.

The more I watch the teaser (yes, enough times to be rightly considered obsessed) the more I think it could be Garth of Izar as well.

If the scenes involving the volcanic world are early in the film than I think it would be Garth but if they are late in the film then it would likely be Mitchell.

If I had to put money on it I'd say it's Mitchell - I'm pretty sure you see him in a black cadet outfit briefly plus the blonde science officer and the ship in water (I know a similar tactic was used in WoK but it could also be that Mitchell managed to find the Valiant and not just some of its logs).

Yeah, you can see the Star Fleet insignia on the black uniform in the one shot of him in the command chair.

I'll be surprised if it's Garth...unsurprised if it's Mitchell. You know more than me though Loki, so I'll conceded to whomever you think he is. :)

Either way I'm happy, as this just looks phenomenal.

I think it's wishful thinking when it comes to Garth - he has the potential to be a kickarse villian though. The guy attempted genocide!

It's far more likely to be Mitchell.

Regardless of who the villian is, I'm expecting to thoroughly enjoy the movie. :)

Mitchell's a bit over the top uber-powerful... could work but seems a bit too over-the-top for JJ,
Garth, perhaps before he's in the Asylum, opens up more possibility of ship vs ship action.

And of course there are a few dozen other possibilities including Khan...

It's very competent but it's rather a hollow teaser that looks like it's trying to win over the audiences of both the Dark Knight trilogy and Avengers and falls somewhat between two stools...

I don't think that'll be any indication of the film though, just the marketing tactic. I do hope it doesn't lose the sense of adventure the first one had to be all dark and that.

It's a "teaser"

That means it's supposed to be hollow.

I had a thought it could be (since it's an Alt universe) a combination of the Khan and Mitchell characters....

I'm fine with a trailer not telling me very much, which is the point of a teaser (and hell, I long for the good old days when a trailer didn't tell you everything), but that's not my problem with it- it's that it seems to me to so strongly be calling out for the audiences of those other films that it doesn't show much of a personality of its own. And in my mind that's exactly the point of a teaser - give an idea of the flavour of the film without telling you anything.

Essentially, despite looking kick-ass, this hasn't really made me anticipate the film more than I already was.

Yeah, I think I look too much into trailers sometimes. :)

Mildly off topic but when it comes to trailers, what i look for is consistency.
If the first trailer makes aflic look like a comedy and the next one makes it look like a fantasy adventure and then maybe a romance for good measure, it's a fair bet the marketing doesnt know what to do with it because the film is all over the place.

Back on topic, the marketing for the first JJ Trek was very consistent.... speeding spaceships, big kabooms, glimpses of mad crazy action scenes, all built the tone for a sf adventure movie that amped those elements of Trek way beyond previous incarnations.

This trailer seems to be going the same way. if the marketing takes an abrupt shift in the next few months i'll get worried, but i trust JJ... and i say that having survived later seasons of ALIAS and DOLLHOUSE.

That is because of the awesomeness that is Fringe.

By the way, just for the record, this is the sort of thing I think of as a good teaser trailer...

True dat.

But even FRINGE has had its misfires... TREK showed us that JJ can bring his best game (as reflected in his best tv work) to the big screen.

The last season of which has been poop on a stick so far.

Tho I think Abyss is crazy, DOLLHOUSE is flat out EXCELLENT all the way through.
