Thanks!

Getting tired of the constant comparisons to GRRM, though. Who the hell cares? People have their preferences, and as Erikson says there's more than enough time to read both for people who are truly interested.

I didn't actually know there was any serious rivalry between SIF fans and Malazafans. I think the interviwer made that point up for the purpose of discussion.

Hell, i FOUND Malazan because of a reco post on a SIF board.

More to the point, there are a few millions more of them than us and most of us count as SIF fans too.... at least, every five years or so.

i think the "rivalry" came out more recently, with the exponential growth of ASoIaF's popularity... a whole lot of people who never picked up a piece of paper in their lives before ( i know some) found out that reading CAN actually be fun ( :p ) thanks to GRRM and so elevated him to god-status with untouchablesness (i don't give a withered imass prick if it's not a real word) on the side.
A LOT of them then tried Malazan ,for a reason or another didn't like it, and felt the need to state it everywhere -- thus creating a supposed "rivalry" between the fandoms.

Personally i read and liked both (tho mbotf more, of course) so i really couldn't care less... except for the awesome flame wars between fandoms on some boardsm i LOVE reading those, especially if i got popcorns.

It totally threw me for a loop when I first heard Erikson pronounce Malazan. For the next several months I had to remind myself how to pronounce it, with my girlfriend constantly poking fun at me for having said it wrong for so many years due to the fact that she pronounced it right for the get-go and I tried to change the way she said it. Luckily, I've gotten to the point where I no longer even think of saying it the way I used to ("Mal-uh-zan" with "mal" as in "malice" and "zan" rhyming with "van").

Eh, people on Westeros have been hostile towards Malazan since well before the GoT show started.

"Mal-uh-zan"

This is how it's pronounced. I don't care.

I used to pronounce it Muh luh zuhn since in my language vowels always have the same pronounciation .. i thought the correct english pronounce was "Mal uh zan" , and when i heard the "right" one in the interview i freaked out

Edit: The effects of the loss of identity following this terrible revelations are starting to show ... i can't take the word MALAZORS out of my head and i keep imagining a seguleh riding a k'chain with laser rifles

I like how they link to the New Yorker article in which I was interviewed :p

I did come to Malazan from GRRM, and have kind of left GRRM behind since he's leaving me behind for years and years while Erikson (and Esslemont) are gifts that keep on giving.

It kind of threw me off when I heard Erikson pronounce Malazan too.

Also, do you guys know how to pronounce Esslemont? I had that wrong as well.

Rhymes with "Vessel font"?

Wired: Are there particular fan sites or message boards that are best for reading analysis of your work?

Erikson: Not that I’m aware of.

But but Steve?

I think Steve was thinking more in lines of analytical essays that dig really deep into his work.

RE Forge of Darkness: "Some people on the Malazan Empire fan site were sort of sayin, why go for something where we know what's happened? My response would you only think you know what's happened."

Yeah, I was one of those. I stand absolutely corrected :p

I'm at the part where he's talking about his disappointment with fantasy video games, and Steven said he doesn't like the stories of any of them. Does anyone know whether he has played Planescape: Torment, which is considered to be the pinnacle of fantasy RPG games in terms of story, choice, and character? And he also mentions that he doesn't like how trope-driven most of them are, which is why Planescape: Torment seems like it would be right up his alley, as it doesn't really use tropes to drive the story.

Exactly whisperszzz!

I was just about to write the exact same comment about PST and that SE should play it as it would be right up his alley.

Actually, I think SE should just start playing older RPGs in general, so have his gaming need fulfilled.

Hopefully he will read this thread ;)
