A powerful man met his end at the blade of an unknown stranger. The man Jabari, also known as The Red Blade's Tip, long suspected to be a member of an assassination chapter, was slain last night while he was on a mission. City Guard detachments came upon his remains, which were spread all along the shore of the Mirror: a leg here, an arm there, the head mounted on top of a pike just outside the city gates. According to the letter stuffed in his mouth, which resembled a (poorly spelled) assassination contract, Jabari was after the life of the daughter of a local imam. The grateful clergy immediately declared the stranger to be a Beloved of the One God.

Ironically, really. I know he is none such.

Wow, has someone finally died, or is P-S just screwing with us? Why no CF or anything? Guessing this is just flavour text of some sort?

Going back to this...

Quote

The One God
2 Worship/cycle: each dawn, gain 1 good of your choice. This may not be Worship.
4 Worship/cycle: name a type of action. The first two times this game it is used against you, it fails.
6 Worship/cycle: the votes of other players who do not pray to the One God don't count when they vote you.
Upon end of Worship: you lose -0/-1 Life Point until the end of the game.

I see nothing there that would or might prevent a kill or CF or something.... Unless someone is paying 4 worship/cycle and named Assassination as their action. Maybe that's what happened. Someone tried to assassinate someone praying to the One God, it didn't work, so a random red shirt was put into the scene.

I read it more that someone tried an assassination, but was stopped because the person he targeted was praying to the One God.
From the Encyclopedia:

Quote

The One God[/size]2 Worship/cycle: each dawn, gain 1 good of your choice. This may not be Worship.
4 Worship/cycle: name a type of action. The first two times this game it is used against you, it fails.

This is the quest resolution. It is the prize which the quest completer gained:

Gain the title Beloved of the One: As long as you pray to the One God for at least 1 Worship per day/night cycle, you heal 1 Life Point per phase, and you have +0/+1 Life Points in addition to all other effects of praying.

The dead man is flavour text - one of the quest objectives was to assassinate someone (a person made up by PS).

Only someone with this much power could make this many frittatas without breaking any eggs.

Congrats to whoever completed that quest by the way!

That's out already? Geez, there's a plethora of good books due out in the next few months! Dresden's Cold Days, Blood and Bone, Memory of Light, and I'm sure there are a couple more that I can't think of right now!

I would have thought an assassin would have chosen the "cheap assassinations" prize. The fact that they chose differently perhaps suggests it might not be an NP member who completed the quest.

Did you get any questions to answer like Ruse?

And, if so, will you hold out longer than Ruse managed? :twoguns:

So I know it's been covered already but just to get it all together this is the sequence from yesterday to today:

Day
-Hadj from ND to the Mirror
-Mirror made Sacrosanct

Dusk
-Hadj from Mirror to ND

Dawn (probably but could also be at the start of today I guess)
-NP Quest resolved

Day
-ND sacrosanct

As others have said it doesn't make a ton of sense to have the double Hadj if it were all by Fener/Spite unless they really really really wanted to both get to the northern desert. I was thinking something like

-Fener has 14 worship and is not CoV
-Spite has 8 worship
-They both want to protect each other and both want to end up in the desert
-For whatever reason they can't/won't give the worship to each other (out of money? afraid someone else will grab it from the bazaar first? etc)
-Fener doesn't have the resources to move via his regular means
-fener Hadjs to the Mirror
-Fener Sacrosancts the Mirror to protect Spite
-Spite hadjs them both to the desert

But typing that up just now I realize that doesn't work either because Spite could've just Hadjed to the Desert which was already Sacrosanct... so I don't know. I think the Hadjs have to be from different people. Maybe the first Hadj was submitted a while before the end of day to try and give us a chance of lynching Fener? Very kind to whomever would do such a thing but it wouldn't work (PS said if you move tiles you get the effects of both for the phase so Fener would still be sacrosanct from the desert)

I think you're right. The Dark Lord-related reward sounded very beneficial for NP players too.

Okay another possible theory:

A new quest opens up.

Death as Payment
Steps to fulfill in order:
- Preparation: pay 2 Worship and 2 Weapons
- Travel: travel to the Mirror
- Preparation: pay 2 magic
- Scouting: use 1 Retainer
- Single Combat: win an assassination as the attacker against a CS 2 opponent.

The first Hadj was done by whomever was doing the quest to get to the mirror? If it was Fener it could explain why he would go there and back rather than just let Spite come to him.
