Aww, we don't get to go through the normal race selection process? What if I don't want to be Hydran or Terran, I don't even get a chance at another?

(I know, I'm such a complainer...)

Huh, we've always played it this way. Drawing a sheet at random and choosing between the human and alien.

I haven't read the rules on it, myself, but the person who ran it when I played seemed to know what he was doing. He had everyone ordered randomly somehow (I think we rolled dice?) and we were around the table in that order - ie: P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6 - and P1 would get to go first. Then P6 got to choose their race - either picking an alien or picking a human and taking the corresponding alien out of the game (ie: someone picked yellow human to take Draco out of the game), and then it went to P5 and so on. So the closer one was to going first, the less choice someone had, and also you could pick based on what the person with a wormhole facing to you picked (ie in your diagram, the person in 2K might not want to pick a weak military alien if 2A picked Orion!)

As I edited above, I'm okay with the random though, since Tapper should be facing away from me and HD will probably go Human - otherwise I would be Hydran sandwhiched between the two military guys!

I crushed the Hegemony with Hydran Progress last time I played. Technology is awesome :)

It is up to players to choose their sheet in order. Text box page 5 of the rules:

If you decide to play with the alien species, players choose the species
they play with. Beginning with the player on the right side of the start
ing player and moving counterclockwise, each player chooses a spe
cies and places the starting hex. Note that if you choose Terrans, you
also effectively choose one alien species out of the game.

EDIT: that being said, I am OK with playing it this way. Tis more of a test run anyway to see if it works on a forum, and we play with a lot of inexperienced players (myself included, 1 game with an opponent, and 2 dry-runs).

How much time commitment is required?

If it's approx 1 h/day or less, i'd be interested in trying (if HD is out).

I have no time for mafiaz these days, but need my internet game fix.

And I want to state that Ment has out-weaseled me by far in this game.

Ok I'll guess I'll be terran as advised. Is there any online program like real politik for this, as I'm having difficulty visualising exactly what resources I have available.

I'll post updates with images. However, Vassal, the program I am using gives a good overview

OK, I've read through the rules. I think I'll take Terran for my first game. The Descendent's extra abilities sound a little double edged...on the one hand you want Ancients around so that you can use them as extra defences for your systems, but on the other hand you don't get the Discovery tiles for systems that they're sitting in. Also, I suspect having more movement and a better trade ratio will be helpful on the first go around.

Morgy, is the vassal program only for you running the game or should we/do we need to get it, too?

It's only for me running it. I'll add updates to the map, tech overview etc to the thread as the game progresses.

However, if you feel you need more overview then Vassal works pretty well.

Alright. I've asked Ment to step in for HD.

I'll set up a game thread tonight. If there are ways you think I can make it more userfriendly please post in here. Ideally, if this works well we can find a good template for later games.

I will also draw play order (during following rounds play order will be defined by the first player to pass and clockwise from there) and technologies.

Do you guys have a prefered date to start this thing?

Whenever. The diplomacy break is mostly to allow me time for my mafia game. I doubt Eclipse will interfere to the same extent.

The game has not officially started yet. I'm still waiting for the remaining players to ok it. Additionally, IH, can you sticky the game thread?

I'm ok to start whenever. So we just say in the game thread what actions we want to do when it is our turn?

By the way, it might be a good idea to switch IH and Tapper's colours around. IH is playing as white and Tapper as black, but you've got IH in Grey and Tapper in White in the game thread.

He does? I see Tapper as black and IH as grey text.

Maybe it depends on your forum skin? Black is the default on some and white is the default on others.
