Welcome to Eclipse

Posted Image

The galaxy has been a peaceful place for many years. After the ruthless Terran–Hegemony War (30.027–33.364), much effort has been employed by all major spacefaring species to prevent the terrifying events from repeating themselves. The Galactic Council was formed to enforce precious peace, and it has taken many courageous efforts to prevent the escalation of malicious acts. Nevertheless, tension and discord are growing among the seven major species and in the Council itself. Old alliances are shattering, and hasty diplomatic treaties are made in secrecy. A confrontation of the superpowers seems inevitable – only the outcome of the galactic conflict remains to be seen. Which faction will emerge victorious and lead the galaxy under its rule?

A game of Eclipse places you in control of a vast interstellar civilization, competing for success with its rivals. You will explore new star systems, research technologies, and build spaceships to wage war with. There are many potential paths to victory, so you need to plan your strategy according to the strengths and weaknesses of your species, while paying attention to the other civilizations' endeavors.

The shadows of the great civilizations are about to eclipse the galaxy. Lead your people to victory!

---------

This is a game of several quick actions spread over nine rounds of play. It will require each player to post at the minimum once every 24 hours, ideally more than that. However, as each action consists of smaller choices it should be possible to run this game in an orderly fashion and within a reasonable time frame.

This is however the first time I attempt to run a game of Eclipse online, so expect a few teething issues.

The rules are fairly intuitive (see attachment), and there's no requirement to have played before. I do however suggest that new players play as a Terran faction.

As opposed to the regular game, we will play with revealed victory markers, and instead of choosing in secret I will simply provide the player with the highest draw.

There's room for six players (including myself), and sign ups start now.

Players:

1- Morgoth
2- Tapper
3- D'rek
4- HD
5- Imperial Historian
6- STD

Starting Grid (can be expanded if necessary)

Seems fun. Add me. Hopefully I can make sense of it soon!
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

I guess I should add D'rek and Tapper too from the conversation in the board games thread

I can play if you need another person, but I'd rather watch a first game since I've never played it before, if anyone else wants to sign up.

I assume the 6th starting player location is in 2G on the grid?

Monster Hunter World Iceborne: It's like hunting monsters, but on crack, but the monsters are also on crack.

Yeah, I left it out to make the numbering of home systems more obvious.

ST said in the other thread that he would play, too.

Ok. If STD confirms the game should be ready. I'm going to distribute the colours randomly, and you'll each get to chose between the Human or Alien faction corresponding to the colour. All human factions are identical in all but fluff.

Is fluff a valuable resource?

Since the races are available in the PDF, I'm simply giving you guys the choice here to reduce clutter in the game thread.

1- Morgoth - Planta / Terran
2- Tapper - Hegemony / Terran
3- D'rek - Hydran / Terran
4- Mentalist - Eridani / Terran
5- Imperial Historian - Mechanema / Terran
6- STD - Descendants / Terran

Simply yell out which you want. I suggest the new players go for Terran, but it is not required.

Aww, we don't get to go through the normal race selection process? What if I don't want to be Hydran or Terran, I don't even get a chance at another?

(I know, I'm such a complainer...)

edit: I changed my mind, it's fine. Tapper please don't kill me in two turns :)

I will try and be Hydran

Anyway I can bow out of this to watch a game first? Reading the rules and this shit is complicated.

If I can do it, you can do it!

(and pick Terran)

Huh, we've always played it this way. Drawing a sheet at random and choosing between the human and alien.

If you want, but it's actually surprisingly intuitive when you play. I can slot you in as the last player so you can see what the others are doing first if that would help.

I haven't read the rules on it, myself, but the person who ran it when I played seemed to know what he was doing. He had everyone ordered randomly somehow (I think we rolled dice?) and we were around the table in that order - ie: P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, P6 - and P1 would get to go first. Then P6 got to choose their race - either picking an alien or picking a human and taking the corresponding alien out of the game (ie: someone picked yellow human to take Draco out of the game), and then it went to P5 and so on. So the closer one was to going first, the less choice someone had, and also you could pick based on what the person with a wormhole facing to you picked (ie in your diagram, the person in 2K might not want to pick a weak military alien if 2A picked Orion!)

As I edited above, I'm okay with the random though, since Tapper should be facing away from me and HD will probably go Human - otherwise I would be Hydran sandwhiched between the two military guys!

Try it out (as a Terran, not only is that leaving no weaknesses, Eridani are also goddamned hard to play). It looks very difficult, and the manual isn't helping in making it look easy with its design, but it is very intuitive once underway.

Play, HD, play, it's really not bad and we are all nice people! Plus you've got me on one side (will be sitting on my bit researching - maybe we could even have an alliance?) and IH on the other side (also new)!
