I finished the book a while back and loved it (found it a tad anti-climactic though), but one thing still kind of bothers me.

What was the point of those women, other than being slightly annoying at times? They just showed up out of nowhere, and insisted they help tehol with a something he already thought out, and which he didnt need any help with in the first place (except for bugg of course :))

They didnt add anything usefull to the plan, they just got in the way, and still tehol agrees to let them on his team... He even spends a considerable amound of time and effort in getting them a body guard, getting them out of the way, and finding them a place to stay...

WHY???

If anyone can tell me... Many thanks :D

I had the similar feeling (although I didn't find it anticlimactic in no way). But, I accepted it like they will show up in the latter novels? It was always the case so far with the minor characters.

You've got it all upside down.

First of all, Tehol wasn't planning anything. He had settled into living on his roof and being the friendly neighbourhood crazy guy, as he knew from his previous enterprise he could bring down the economy if he wanted to, and was content with that. So why does he start again? Because the three ladies show up and threaten to expose his previous machinations if he does not help them to make what little money they have into a lot more money because they want to help the empoverished tribespeople the Lether empire snared into its webs.

Sure, they themselves were rather useless aside from providing comic relief, but consider that they did sniff out Tehol's previous doings (while almost everyone else was traipsing around in the dark) and that they set the plan into motion that would open for Tehol a way to make up for Hull's 'sins' against the tribes bordering the Lether empire (by obtaining enough money to ship the indebted tribes people to empty islands).

So, basically, there's a serious story hiding behind the comic relief this plotline provides.

@ puck: thanks, indeed I had it all upside down... feel better now =)

Maybe I should elaborate on this... I dont mean the end of the book, I mostly mean the battles through the book.

Like, there is a buch of tension building, and when both armies are completely set up and ready for it, Hannan Mosag does his magic and its all over.

I prefer sword battles I guess :)

Thats kind of the point though - it just highlights how horrific the chaos magic is. Even Trull and the Edur watching are horrified as an entire army is turned into bones.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.
