OP edited to add link for Chapter 11 excerpt. Also, there are two reports on the DragonCon Q&A, one from Thirteenth Depository and one from tor.com. Most of that was old news to HCFFs (probably not so much you guys), but one really big tidbit we didn't know before: there's a 70,000-word 'chapter' with about 80 POV changes. That's just... ... ...

70,000 words is about the length of a standard Sherlock Holmes book.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

This from Brandon's facebook page..

Quote

At Dragon*Con I read a new excerpt from A MEMORY OF LIGHT. There will probably be three excerpts released after this, before the book comes out. I'm guessing they'll arrive in October/November, but I don't know for sure. As with previous volumes, the prologue will be released as an ebook. Tor.com will likely put up the full text of chapter one, and chapter two will probably go up in the audio form. The three segments that have been released so far, you can read on Tor.com now: the first scene of the prologue, a short clip from chapter one, and a scene from chapter eleven. You don't have to worry about the chapter eleven scene spoiling anything that goes before it. The hardcover book will be released on January 8th.

Yeah, those three are standard: prologue, chapter 1, and audio chapter 2. We already have an excerpt from chapter 1 but we'll presumably get the whole thing.

The prologue is now available for purchase (USD $2.99) on Dragonmount, and other places, though I understand other places are having difficulties. Technically it is only available to US and Canada residents but you can use someone else's US address (it's legal as long as you have permission). They don't check it against your card, and they don't check IP addresses either.

AND PRETTY FUCKING SWEET
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Yeah, that was pretty awesome. Excited about this now. Wondering if I've got time for a full WoT re-read before the final one hits...

I am very pleased with events in the first chapter, and also very pleased that I posted my Why Roedred argument last night. I've been saying most of those things for a while now, but I got all my latest thoughts into a post just before the chapter went up, and some of them were more or less confirmed in that chapter. For those who don't know, Brandon confirmed the other day that Demandred does indeed have an alter ego. And we know from other quotes that 1) we have clues enough to figure it out by WH at the latest, and 2) his alter ego has never been seen on screen.

Nice. Prologue was good, chapter 1 is great. It so has me ready to read this. I love WoT. WoT was my favorite series for over a decade. It wasn't until I found Malazan within the last year and a half, that I found a new favorite. I see a lot of malazan fans who hate WoT, but it's still my second favorite series. I've been reading WoT for almost 20 years. I read Eye of the World in like 1994 or so. I still think the opening to WoT is the best opening scene of any series yet. I was hooked from the time I read Lews Therin Theloman standing amidst a sea of the corpses of his family and friends.

Anyway, almost 20 years and a second author later, and this series final book is coming. Finally. I also have to say I was pleasantly surprised by how well Sanderson has done in taking over for Jordan. I almost refused to read his WoT books, thinking no one could do the series justice, or follow after Jordan, but he did, and did an amazing job. I'm stoked to read this book.

WoT is an amazing series. I can't understand how so many Malazan fans dislike it, and vice versa. I use to post over at dragonmount.com, a WoT site, before I came here. In fact, it was there that I kept hearing from time to time about how great the Malazan series was, but there was also always a ton of other WoT fans who thought Malazan sucked, or was too hard to read. Comments like that is what kept me from reading the books sooner. Finally, after I saw Quick Ben in the suduko cage match, I gave them a shot, and was blown away. Malazan moved passed WoT, which was the series I measured all other books against, and nothing ever surpassed WoT until Malazan. Either way, WoT is a frigging amazing series. Rands journey is epic. So excited.

TOR has an awesome book by book recap, an extremely thorough recap of each book. I read it instead of rereading the entire series because I didn't have time, plus I'm not the type of person that really enjoys rereading books. But if there IS a series that needs to be reread, its WoT. There's so much stuff that I'd forgotten, and the recap is amazing. It covers everything in great detail, and even offers personal commentary on a chapter by chapter basis. I read the first few books in the '90s, so I HAD to have a recap.

On a side note, by the time I started reading Malazan, I was able to read all of them back to back. Crippled God wasn't out yet, when I started Gardens of the Moon, but it came out before I finished Toll the Hounds, so everything was fresh in my mind.

As for WoT, Jordan did such an amazing job world creating. I believe it's his best skill. I know as much about the history of the WoT world when it comes to old battles, as I do my own. He has a great military mind. He also creates such believable and in depth races. You just already know what to expect from a Senchean High Lady as opposed to an Aiel Wise One. I just think he did an amazing job world building, and making you care for the characters.

I think Demandred turns 'back to good' and becomes one of the heroes.

Also, do we still think that Taim is Demandred?

Taimandred was thoroughly debunked years ago. Also, the Demandred-betrays-the-Shadow theory is, IMO, rather amusing. The kind of theory you see more often on DM than Theoryland. :)

NO. NO. NO.

JUST NO.

He is going to be the main bad ass enemy.

Oh and no he is most certainly not going to be Taim.

Thats good to hear, actually. I never wanted Taim to turn out to be Demandred. So is there a current theory as to who Taim really is? Or is he just Taim.
