An idea for my upcoming game. mafia, obviously.

So I wanted to get thoughts on this.
I'll be posting the OP of my upcoming game with all the characters, names, backstories, and certain abilities that everyone has to a different extent.
I was thinking I could post this before the game started and open myself up to PMs from people asking to be a certain character.
They wouldn't be allowed to post what they wanted to be in the actual thread, and I'm sure some people would pick the same things.
The plan would be to take what people want to be, and randomize that. So if 5 people wanted to be a leader, and there are three leaders, I would randomize the list of 5 and take the first three. If someone opted out of a certain role (probably leader or independant) I would just remove their name from the list to randomize for that.
Any thoughts on this? I just want to make sure people get proper enjoyment out of their roles, and don't get stuck playing something that they don't want to while someone else would have loved that role.
PMs wouldn't be necessary, of course, people could just go the straight randomization approach.
Anyway, my brain if failing today so hopefully that makes sense.

Clear as mud as they say.
No I understood what you are saying. Love to see your setup. Lots of cool games in the mix for the forseeable future. Not sure what my schedule will bring in the near future but hopefully will be able to jump in on some of them.

I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

This came up after talking to Dinivan about our Independants. We like the idea, but we'd like to give people the option of opting out of playing alone. I know some people would just prefer to be on a team.
And you WILL play my game. It needs quite a few players.

Well it's not a matter of want. It's more of a matter of will I have a job and will that job allow me to access the forum. I'm set until May 11th and then I'm done. Internet at home is out of the question. I'm sure a few of you remember some of my little helper posts from time to time when I try to post at home. That and our computer is dead with no plans to replace it anytime soon.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

This Independants idea sounds interesting, as does the letting people ask for a role.

Awe shucks. Well good luck with all that. Remember, though, Mafia always comes first.

Make people give you a top five pretence list.
So if they miss out on their favourite, they get a shot atsecond fav. Etc

I think this could work, but in order for it to be useful you'd have to make sure that there were plenty of roles of approximately even desirability. As soon as you have one or two roles that are much better than all the others, you're likely just to get everyone putting them at the top of their lists.
BTW, I ran a game a while back that operated on this sort of principle. Mafia 56 used the card game Citadels as the inspiration for it's mechanics. Every day players had to submit a list ordering which roles they wanted. All the players were seated around a table, and a deck of cards with the roles on it was passed around, with each player selecting one. They then had that role for the rest of the day. Unfortunately, I think the underlying mechanics of it were a bit too intricate - players spent too long trying to work out what was going on, and the scum waltzed to victory (didn't help that I probably overpowered the scum quite a bit).

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

I'm out of rep.
The exact abilities of each role will not be clear, but the responsibility level of each will be. eg leader, healer, finder, etc. But not as straight forward as that.

Love this idea JLV. Any idea when this mafia will be out? I have a hankering for being argumentative and anonymous And for killing Twelve on the first day

just for that you'll probably end up as head zombie--still capable of killing twelve, but probably less then articulate....

As much fun as taking me out early is for everyone you will have to wait some time before you get to try again. After Tappers game I'm going to be taking a bit of a mafia sabatical. I really need to focus on some real life issues and I feel that mafia is getting in the way. Too much of a distraction when I need to focus me energies elsewhere. Hoping that I can get them resolved quickly so I can take back up my mafia addiction.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.
