The Wickans are natives of Quon Tali, and they are part of the Malazan Empire. The Red Blades are Seven Cities natives who support the Malazan Empire and formed a special military unit to do just that. The Followers of the Apocalypse are Seven Cities natives who are a mix of religious zealots, opportunists, tribals, and various rebels that all oppose the Malazan conquest of their lands.

Officially, they're on the same side - they are both groups that support the Empress and the Malazan Empire. But that doesn't mean they have to like each other :p Basically, the Red Blades consider themselves keepers of the peace and like to very violently put down any signs of rebellion or unlawfulness that they come upon in their patrols. The Wickans have quite a reputation as being a crazy, uncivilized mob. So the Red Blades, who are all about law and order, don't have a very high opinion of the barbaric Wickans.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

I thought the opposite. Red blades are fanatics for the Malazan and in the stand off you read they were about to dish out indiscriminate vigilante justice on the general population. The Wickans on this occassion were keeping the peace, ie protecting the population.
They are both pro Malazan

Well the Red Blades wouldn't be vigilantes in that instance, since they do have, at least de facto, the authority they were planning to exert. And keeping the peace ≠ protecting the population, though it's a sweet thought. Other than that, what you said is essentially right in that situation, but it doesn't contradict what D'rek said.

Sorry worry but in this instance I can't see that any authority granted them, de-facto or otherwise, would have allowed for what they were clearly planning. Taking a few steps of the boats and then just opening up a fukn cavalry charge in the middle of the marketplace. Would have definitely had collateral damage of malazan settlers.

Of course if the wickans hadn't anticipated it, I'm sure the red blade officers would have been slightly apologetic and got away with only a rap on the knuckles. If that.
