Hi folks.

I've been looking at my finances now that I'm back at school and I don't think I can afford to keep paying to run our MC server at $40CDN/month. I know I'm allowed to host some stuff on my school's servers, but I'm pretty sure game hosting is not allowed. I'll look into it in the coming weeks to see if I can come up with a free solution.

This call goes out to those who still use the server (which I still do on occasion) to see if somebody would like to take over administration and hosting duties. I've been at it for about 9 months now (I think I took over in march-ish last year) and it's probably time for somebody else to step up.

I don't mean to leave you completely to your own devices and will show you exactly how to get it all running....and even continue admin duties on the new host, but I can't keep paying for it seeing as how I have so little time to devote to it these days - and much less cash flowing into my bank account.

I remember a couple people mentioning they might be able to host it free somewhere, which would be ideal.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts on the matter.

I plan to quit by the end of January. If there isn't a taker by then I'm more than happy to provide either the new or the old map file for single player. I'd much rather see the torch taken up by somebody else though. It's always fun having others around to share in the glorious building once in awhile.

Doesn't Minecraft offer free hosting now? I set one up and ran it for just my friend and it seems to run fine.

I could be wrong, i dont know anything about this type of stuff

I haven't played much MC in the last month or so. Too many alternatives released lately. It would be a shame to not have the option of the multiplayer server though. I doubt that I can run the server as smoothly as Jim and CF have over the last while. I may have to opt out of managing the server (I am also inexperienced in that regard), however, if there was a way to provide CF with some much needed donations to keep the server up, then I'm all for lending a few bucks every month.

I'll see if I can convince my roomate Jart to consider taking over. He's pretty knowledgeable, plays MC regularly, and has been a member of the server for over a year. Won't have an answer until later this weekend though.

I seriously know nothing about linux, much less operating a server and I was able to figure it out in an evening. There really is nothing to it. Written instructions can fit in a medium-sized forum post and there are innumerable tutorials on youtube.

It used to be a massive pain in the butthole, but now that releases are less frequent and more stable, the minecraft server pretty much runs itself.

I can probably get some free server space if you'll continue to admin, CF.

If you jsut want to get away from the hassle, I might be able to do it.

But I don't want to really.

HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

I'm perfectly fine with admin duties...it's just the fees I'm trying to get away from.

If you have a free spot to host the server then yes, most definitely that is the best solution and if you can look into it I can do most of the work of transferring files over and setting up the program to run at the new location.

OK, I should talk to the guy (my client who has an IT based company) tomorrow. He has offered space before, so I'll see if it's still good. I will need some info if he wants to start the process so PM me what you think I need to get going. If we hurry, maybe we can pull this off by the end of Jan with no interruption for the kiddies.

Oh, I do very much hope the server will last.

Sadly, I have barely enough money to make my loan payments.

Just asking for clarification here, is it impossible to use Minecraft's free server.exe to do this?

@JLV

the server java file is free but you need a server to host it on.

@HO

If we have something in the works I won't interrupt service. As for what we need to make it go, just some space, I think I have 2GB of ram allocated (but we could get by with 1gb) and I ordered my virtual private server with Linux CentOS already installed (cause it was free), thought it could as easily have been windows, another version of linux or anything else for that matter.

@ Donations suggestion,

I really don't want to get into that. You guys don't really know me and I don't really know you. I really don't want to start being the random internet dude taking peoples' money for any reason other than legitimate business.

Ah I see, so I would be using my laptop as a server because that's where I'm running it from.

I heard it's not really recommended that you run a server on the same machine that you play the game on. But that's just what I've heard. I don't know crap about computers.

I would definitely need a dedicated box for the server.

I do not have access to a decent desktop though.

I'm planning to buy a new pc this month, so I was thinking of maybe being able to run the server on my old one. But the problem seems to be with the amount of bandwidth I am allowed. Apperently running a minecraft server does take a lot of bandwidth and I my limit is pathetically small. Also, my old machine is kinda crappy, so dont know if it would work anyway.
No Touchy.

Afraid not, man. I didn;t make the meeting last week due to illness, but I plan to be there tomorrow. Did you ever send me the info I need to my PM box?

nope.

I guess I just need to know what kind of OS the server would be running...I don't know much about that.

Usually the linux versions are free. The current one runs CentOS version and it came pre-installed, but other versions work just as well.

If I know what version it's running, then I'll just need a server IP, root login and password to start installing stuff. If they plan to make a special account for us on a bigger server that isn't the root, then that login and password is what I need.

they will probably want to make a special account to restrict your access, right? This will be a large service provider's server. My client may want to oversee the process and/or review prior to authorization (these IT guys are always a little paranoid) - but it still should be no problem.

Are you going to be available tomorrow around 1500 - 1800 ish GMT -5?? If so, perhaps we can coordinate or communicate via PM or similar. Don't change any plans, but if you're somewhere with access, we may get lucky and be able to get this thing moving then.
