Hajime grunted and slurped the dregs of his tea, left hand idly picking straw from between his toes. “You should’ve seen’em.” He said, using a piece of straw he found in his toes to pick his teeth. “If you’ve ever seen two strange cats eye each other from across the street, you’ve seen the meeting between Masamoto and Ise.”
Uji sucked his teeth, tutted and poured some more tea. Interpreting that as a sign of interest from the old innkeeper, Hajime continued. “Oh, they were formal and polite enough, but Masamoto knows his authority only goes as far as the tip of his nose, and Ise knows that if he doesn’t keep his scheming under wraps he’ll alienate the ones he’ll eventually need.” Uji nodded sagely, as if those words had made some sort of sense to him. He wasn’t even sure if the fellow sitting here was Masamoto or Ise himself.
“Well, I gotta get back to the stables. The proper authorities pay no attention to you when you’re there, but have fits if you’re not. For the tea and your kind listening.” Hajime stood up, hitched up his fundoshi and dropped a few coins on the table. Uji smiled and bowed obsequiously. Politics had naught to do with his poor old inn.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Hojo knelt and answered his guest’s bow with his own, correctly in both form and depth as both samurai and superior as well as host in his own keep. His page handed him the missives, which he read while servants attended to serving the guest tea. There was nothing unexpected, and he smiled genially at his guest. “Everything seems to be in order for the succession to kamakura kubo.”
The guest bowed politely and gave a brief smile in return. “Indeed. It is trusted that Master Hojo has also sufficiently prepared to give proper notice to the administration as well as household preparations to accommodate the oversight of the Eastern provinces.”
Hojo inclined his head in silent agreement. “Then we are understood.” To the careful listener, the we had been emphasized just enough to be judged as a truly collective pronoun.
“Of course. Continued cooperation is looked forward upon.”
Hojo allowed the man to finish his tea, and then bowed formally with wishes of continued relationship status and favor. After the guest had left, Hojo Souen allowed himself a private smile. Everything was falling into place…
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The year is 1490. The Ashikaga shogunate continues to hold tenuous power over Japan. Their real influence has dwindled however, and they barely receive the support they need once beyond their main sphere of influence. Outside the gates of Kyoto, the provinces are gradually becoming more and more chaotic. The Eastern provinces are proving particularily worrisome, with the sharp wits and political clout of lords like Hojo Souen creating difficulty for Ashikaga officials to maintain proper authority. Ashikaga Masamoto has been appointed by the shogun as the new Kamakura- Kubo of the Eastern part of Japan. It is the job of all loyal vassels to support his efforts to find and stifle conspiracy and rebellion.
This is a town vs. killer(s) game. Town is the Ashikaga and their vassals. Scum are the Hojo clan attempting to gain power and influence. This game (and the entire Warring States series) will feature the succession mechanic. This is not a new mechanic to mafia, but will be used liberally and with differing results based on what is/has taken place. People without roles initially stand the chance to gain roles based on how the game progresses. Even if you start the game as RI, you may not end it as RI. Sometimes it will be obvious from your role PM that you are likely in a line of succession. Sometimes it will fall on you as if out of the blue.
Storyline: It is possible for RI’s to rise as the series progresses from game to game. Since this game will ‘alter history’ the names that are provided in RI roles, if neither killed nor lynched, will possibly make appearances in future games with greater influence accordingly.
There will be a CF in this game of player name, character name and whether they are town or scum. Example: Korvalain (Morgoth) is dead. He was Yoko Ono (Loyal to the Shogunate/Loyal to the Hojo.)
Reveals, real or fake are perfectly acceptable. You may not quote any Path-Shaper private messages however.
The standard RI message is:
You are ************, a small clan leader who is currently loyal to the Ashikaga shogunate.
You are RI.
Scenes will be important in this game as they were in D'reks. I will make no comment as to whether scenes contain clues or not. They may or may not. I will attempt (time permitting) to insert scenes mid-day. I make no claims as to the quality of my scenes (living up to D'rek standards will be difficult).
Days will be 36 hours. Nights will be zero (0) hours. Be like a samurai - make your decision swift and sure. Provisionals are important.

And me...sort of. I'll be offline for a little while now.
Apologies for starting the game during MY Monday, but I'm usually the one getting shafted when my Saturday is almost over by the time the thread is closed for the weekend. And then when I'm rarin' to go Monday morning I have to wait until Tuesday for the thread to open.

That's okay, I understand your pain. Fridays evenings are REALLY slow lately, so we won't be missing anything if we lose those.
But I, unfortunately, must leave.
Enjoy your tea.

Tea, Path-Shaper? It's lonely in here.
I must respectfully decline as I am leaving.
However, if you wish to leave a large barrel of Sake at the shrine in my honor, I will gladly accept such a gift.

Konichiwa, fellow Shogun (that's the good guys, right?). Let us hope that the tea is hot, the steel is cold, and we do not bring dishonor to our families. I'd hate to have to commit Sepukku.

Meanas are you a little confused who the good guys are and who the bad guys are? Did you read the OP?
This is a town vs. killer(s) game. Town is the Ashikaga and their vassals. Scum are the Hojo clan attempting to gain power and influence
loyal to the Ashikaga shogunate.
You are RI.
If you are saying we should all be Shoguns then your wrong about that. There is only one Shogun, he rules absolute.
That does bring up the question what are we to be called? Fellow clan members? Samurai? Soldiers?
"Shogunate - a form of government in which the ruler is an absolute dictator (not restricted by a constitution or laws or opposition etc.)"
"Shogun - The hereditary commander of the Japanese army who until 1867 exercised absolute rule under the nominal leadership of the emperor."

Checking in. My sword for the Ahikaga! It might be boasting, but that one sword will contribute more to Japan's population than the entirety of those two half -arsed untrained formations of ashigaru spearmen at my back.

Quick explanation:
The Shogun is the "Generalissimo" who is the military/civil ruler of Japan (with formal recognition by the Emperor). The Sengoku (warring states) period starts in the waning days of the Ashikaga Shogunate.
Town is aligned with the Ashikaga Shogun. Obviously, if town wins, the Ashikaga shogunate survives a while longer in the face of a splintering Japan (or may even return to primacy, depending how the series goes!)
