Yeah, I should really get to some planning of my own as well. Perhaps I could use the same world as the fantasy novel I'm writing? Is that allowed do you think? I won't have taken any excerpts from what I've already written, possibly just a few characters if any?

i'm doing exactly this, except it's a different time period and a different continent. no overlap.

While most o my characters are in place, they have neither names nor appearances yet. Just their personalities and significance in the story I'm aware of.
What I'm afraid of, is, because of my largely unelaborated planning, I might forget a lot of the detail I've planned... Which might force me to pad the hell out of this thing xD

Cutting names and appearances, focusing first on personalities seems like a pretty good strategy. Hopefully will make for less generic characters as well.

I have one character so far no name. Really more of a kind of plot device. Now I need to make some others and build all their personalities up. Give myself a general plot and then just watch the countdown on the Nano site.

There's a possibility I may try this; however that would require me to get up off my ass and do something.
(Or would that be sitting on my ass and doing something?)

50,000 words required. any other restrictions or rules?

Well technically it has to be completely from scratch, not anything you've already started and continuing (though re-starting is Ok I think). You are allowed to write up support material prior to the start.
It also has to be fiction.

Yeah, sorry. Those basic reqs. But yeah, it can be anything in the fictional realm, so free over that, and it should be understood that it's all written from scratch.

I'm in. Signed up and everything. My 'net is just capped to hell and back until the 27th/28th because I went over my data allowance. Ugh. FML. :unworthy:

While I'm not surprised you went over your data, what I want to know is why do YOU have a plan you can max out?

New Zealand is one of those countries that has data caps, isn't it? such a shitty deal. i'm glad that there was enough public outrage in Canada over UBB, and the gov dropped it, for now.

Data caps are a way of life for some countries :p Mine frustrated me to no end, but thankfully I now have an uncapped account, and it's glorious :unworthy:

Seriously, thank heaven for no caps or I'd be eight kinds of screwed.

On another note, I think I might be decently prepared for this thing! I started working on an outline / notes and I got quite a bit down. Now I just need to come up with a name for this world o' mine...I always hate trying to think of one, I can never invent one that sounds right.

Oh thank God. My net is back up, and I now have 60Gb of data a month instead of 20Gb. I only hope this holds up to my usage, 'cuz otherwise I'm going to go explode Telecom in order to obtain proper internet. *sigh*

Good thing this isn't costing any more per month than the old setup. D:<

whew... wow, so i'm finally finished my prep work (excluding whatever minor tweaks i come up with before tuesday), and it was certainly an interesting experience, as i outlined in much more detail than i ever have before. my story takes place on a very fixed timeline, so i had to make sure that the pacing and timing of events was realistic and compelling, at least to me. plus, all this outlining allowed me to closely examine each character in various scenarios over a short period of time, meaning i could easily pinpoint inconsistencies in their character and fix them. all in all, i'm even more excited for this than before. can't wait to get to it!

anybody thought of any good schemes to stay motivated? i've decided that each day there shall be no gaming or reading until i've written between 1500 and 2000 words. considering that AC:Revelations and Skyrim are coming out, as well as AoL, i imagine i'll have plenty of motivation. :unworthy:

I find that sort of motivation to be a double-edged sword, for obvious reasons. :unworthy:

Personally, I'm going to rely on a combination of my own willpower, the fact that I actually *enjoy* writing, and hopefully that by now I've got enough pent-up ideas to last me the distance. It's not much in the way of motivation, but if that's not enough, I won't be able to do it any other way. That, and of course much encouragement and a sense of competition from you lot, right? :p

I'm actually trying to write as little as possible until Nanowrimo begins and I'm doing a lot of reading, because reading a great book always makes me want to write. Other than that I guess it's just...cross my fingers and hope for the best! With Skyrim out soon I know I'll be dividing my spare time between it and Nano, but I think I'll manage.

I need to finish off my characters tonight and work on a basic plot outline (I've mostly worked on setting so far). The dread is starting to set in.
