Alchemy is certainly playing a bigger role in world affairs what with Moranth munitions and longevity and ressurection products. Alchemy is probably one of the many paths to Ascendancy. Baruk himself mentions that the paths to Ascendancy are many and varied.

an Ascendant Baruk can be King. A Black(?) Moranth,Malazan sapper, and Duiker can have positions. Kallor might leave the HoC for Alchemy.

Drugs and poisons are alchemical.

Oh and iirc, the Incas and ancient Indians both deified a drug.
