2011 08 03 - THE BELOW THREAD WAS INITIALLY A RUNNING SERIES OF POSTS BY MOI AND A FEW OTHERS WHILE READING GHOST STORY.
SPOILERS ARE BLOCKED UNTIL MY 'JUST FINISHED IT' REVIEW AT POST #24BELOW.
YOU HAVE BEEN SPOILERWARNED.
I gleefully got my dresdencrack fix and plowed through the first 220 pages of GHOST STORY last night, and I feel the need to gloat, rant, rave and gossip...
...y'know, there's a good reason we call this the dresdencrack...
CAUTION SPOILERS SPOILERS GHOST STORY SPOILERS YOU GET
ONE DRESDENCRACK FIX A YEAR IF YOU'RE LUCKY SO DON'T SPOILERS
IT SPOILERS SPOILERS FUCKING GHOST STORY SPOILERS
SPOILERS
AND ALSO
SPOILERS
in this thread but for now BLOCK and MARK them so no one clicks on something they haven't read yet....
Grabbing from elsethread...

Yeah, so far for me GHOST STORY is pure win.
Glad you picked it Abyss. You won't regret it.
Also:
Spoiler
Molly: "How do I know it's you?"...Harry Ghost: "You will go to the Dagobah system, there you will learn from Yoda, the Jedi Master who instructed me."...and Molly's reaction...I got a little glossy eyed...is that wrong? Also, are you getting a Sirius Black vibe from Molly now that she's technically on the run and haggared? I love that.
Four words on page 102 that reduced me to (manly, tough and also entirely manly) tears...
Spoiler
"Chewbacca is with her."

Spoiler response...
Spoiler
I more laughed at that, typical Dresden but got glossy eyed when Harry first seen Mister with Murph and then Mister's reaction when he finally seen him in the house... pure gold!
Also loving the X-Men references...
Spoiler
Indeed the X-men references keep getting better. I loved the "First Shadowcat and now Nightcrawler? This is awesome!" line. @Abyss...yeah that Chewbacca line kinda did me in too. I was waiting for Mouse's fate since we'd already found out about Mister. I think what I liked about the Dagobah line is Molly's reaction is to flood with emotion and stagger backwards while saying "oymygod ohmygod" over and over. There was a palpable emotion there and my throat got lumpy. Just sayin. That said, I'd like to say what I am liking a lot so far is Harry adapting to what he can and can't do as a ghost, what avenues he has to use to get across to people and the fact that his body wasn't found...I think that's going to be key later on...and that fight with the Wraiths and the Grey Ghost sorcerer at only like 5 chapters in was BADASS..and was that actually Bob?!
SPOILERS FOR THE FIRST 220 PAGES DO NOT CLICK IF YOU HAVEN'T READ....
Spoiler
Harry getting pissed off and refusing to move from the train's path was so perfectly in character.
Carmichael!
Murphy's dad!? As in suicided himself Murphy's Dad who ran the Black Cat files?!?!? Cool.
Okay, Sir Samuel is awesome.
Full points to whoever it was who said back in a CHANGES thread that Lindquist was going to be significant for this book.
Evil Bob? EVIL BOB??? Or more likely a Kemmler spin-off...
JUSTICE LEAGUE CHICAGO!!!!!!! YAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!! So happy to see this picked up from AFTERMATH. It's such a perfect idea and Murphy so completely rocks it.
Also, more X-men refs! MORE!!!!
Daniel Carpenter is a full blown idiot but i forgive him because it gave Murphy an excuse to PWN THE FUCK OUT OF A WHITE COURT VAMPIRE WITH HER BARE HANDS. That scene alone justified this book.
So the Black Court's out of the picture too, huh.
Also, I totally called it - Harry's thoughts close to confirm the Eebs are almost certainly still in play.
Full points to butcher for the way he wrote Murphy's emotion when Mort explained why he's there.
MISTER!!!!!!
Oh wow that Molly scene was Bru. Tal.
It bears restating: "Chewbacca is with her." raised tears. Like stop reading and just shake my head for a minute tears.
Driveby! And Samule rocks AGAIN.
Graceland little girl ghost is creepy. Eternal Silence somewhat silly.
Oh crap Samuel! Y'know, considering the prophecy is one will die, one will change, one will be maimed, it's beginning to look like most of that has already happened... Samuel was definitely a friend, no re-dead, and Molly is already changed/maimed.
Butters! BUTTERS!!!!! AND BOB!!!!!!!
Ooo... evil Kemmler Bob bad news. Harry is just seeing all kinds of crap backfire, isn't he...?
And it looks like we're on our way to visit with Marcone.... BOO-YAH.
- Abyss, lovin the d-crack.

Nobody panic. I'm calling a Code Red immediately.
I want the evac team airborne in six minutes with the full extraction and relocation package operational before they enter active airspace.
We need six copies of DEAD BEAT, three econo-size bottles of vodka, a steakburger with fries, hand cut, none of that frozen garbage, and a surgical team with supplementary Ukrainian nurses standing by.
MOVE PEOPLE, MOVE. THIS IS THE REAL THING!
QT/KK... stay calm.. it's going to be okay. Try not to move.
Great choice to read this Abyss. I just finished it, it was awesome. No big surprise there. Only another year or so til the next one.
Spoiler
I also really liked the whole "Chewbacca is with her" quote as well. Though as usual, there are several memorable quotes.
For now I will bow out of here until we can converse in non-spoilers. I hate clicking all the boxes hehe.
In other news, I did my good deed of the week... I introduced my brother to the series on Sunday and he is already almost through Summer Knight and loving it.

Molly & Harry in the diner....fucking heart rending. she's REALLY broken.
The training scene with Justin was a really nice window onto something we know little about. nice touch that...Flickum Bicus!
...leading into Harry rediscovering his magic ghost-memory-style! Woot!
Dude...the Hood Gang's lair...Grey Ghost (a woman! But WHO!!) torturing Mort ...who spits in her face defiantly and tells her to go fuck herself. I never thought Mort had it in him. Fuck if I don't like the bastard now too! LOL
The fuck is a Fomor?
Fitz is an interesting plot point character. Introspective dead Harry puts more thought into things and sees himself in the little thug.
RAGGED ANGEL?!?! Fuck yeah Nick! Nice nod to the short story readers man.
More later....

“Someone will always try to sell you despair, just so they don't feel alone.” ~Ursula Vernon
Bob has a swanky apartment in the skull and looks like James Dean. LOL! Perfect!
Harry's body is still in play somehow!
Whoa, Harry's teenage escape from initial torment of DuMorne, and his first encounter with HE WHO WALKS BEHIND...pretty freaky...and a nice Clerks reference (QuickStop) as well.
Butters + Daniel + Fitz + Harry VS Baldy and Co. to rescue Forthill = Fucking awesome.
Harry to Angel of Death about Forthill : "If you try to take him, you and I are going to throw down." Fuck me man!
Best quote of this section: "Is he fast like Jackie Chan, or fast like The Flash?"
LOVING this book man.

Only managed to get to 240ish last night...
Spoiler
Kincaid, Kincaid, Kincaid.... it's TOO obvious to be the answer. Shame on Murphy for shagging him again tho'.
Daniel Carpenter is high on my list of suspects at the moment... no doubt he thinks he's #1 to take up Amorstabbius.... his dad probably trained him on firearms, and by taking out Harry, he forces Murphy to bring out the Swords...
Aw look, Justin was nice. He even played baseball with lil' Harry... and then brained him with baseballs.
Lea training Molly.... no wonder she's a mess.
Turtlenecks! That fight was brilliant... Molly has come (and gone) a long long way in six months.
Ok Harry... you feel responsible for everything that has gone wrong, ever, everywhere. We get it. Go kick some ass now pleasethanx.
I can't quite decide whether I like Fitz or not, but the fact that Murphy wants to bust him does add an interesting element to his part in the story.

Yeah, I think of Daniel as suspect No. 1 as well, but for a different reason. Michael was wounded because of Harry, and Molly is right off the deep end...because of Harry...and yeah Kincaid is too obvious, so I think Daniel has the proper motive as Harry's involvement has effed up his family.

re whodunit...
Spoiler
All good reasons, plus in THE WARRIOR another Carpenter kid was taken hostage and Harry was involved in that situation too.
Tho this would eliminate the theory that whoever has been trying to kill Harry previous to CHANGES (car bomb, driveby, etc) was also the shooter, since the various attempts pre-date Michael being injured in SMALL FAVOR.

Indeed, I actually don't think whoever shot Harry is the same person as the car bomb, drive-by ect....those things were fairly brutal, if clumsy attempts at him and a rifle shot beaning him from 450 yards away seems like a different caliber (<----see what I did there?) of ballgame, but that could just be me.

Spoiler
Yep. Also, based on Butters' and Murphy's chat, Daniel may be out as the suspect on the basis that he couldn't have made the shot, not being a professional marksman, tho arguably a talented amature could do it...
The book keeps drifting away from the question of who actually did pull the trigger, even tho that seems to be central.

“Someone will always try to sell you despair, just so they don't feel alone.” ~Ursula Vernon
I think for pacing and pure quality of read/comedy no one comes close to him at the moment... really enjoying this new book...
Spoiler
Feeling like a journey novel so far for Harry, learning a LOT about himself, remembering past actions and truely learning from them... even though this new found moral Harry is still... deep down... the Harry we truely know and love... the hell-hath-no-fury-mess-if-you-dare Harry Dresden!
I love the way Butcher sets up the next chapter or paragraphs to come with such lines as...
Quote
Whats the worst that can happen in an hour..!"
and
Quote
Play it cool Dresden... real cool!
You just know shit is about to hit the fan and this is what keeps you hooked... keeps you page turning
And when I compare it to the other big recent release that I was really excited for... aDwD... for me... so far... aDwD doesn't come close to the enjoyment I am getting from GS...
But then again... this is the Dresdencrack addict talking... ah my precious!
