If I was to pick one, it would be Planescape: Torment, no competition for that.
If I was to pick three, I'd add Deus Ex (AI ending) and Blood Omen/Soul Reaver/Soul Reaver 2/Defiance (as a continuing story).
If I could pick five, I'd also mention Mass Effect 1&2 (could go higher up the chain if ME3 is as good as they make it out to be) and Warcraft 3 + Frozen Throne (say what you will about Blizzard right now, but the whole story arc of Arthas' corruption is very, very well executed I'd say

I won't lie, Soul Reaver endings never really hit the same type of sweet spot for me that being Kain after vanquishing the next fool who was arrogant enough to think he could surpass Kain's own arrogance did. The overall Raziel arc was superbly done, but the cutoff points at the end of SR and SR@ weren't really that strong.

What are your (or anyone else's) thoughts on Baldur's Gate? I started to play it once, but I'm not sure what happened to it. If I wanted to play both, do I need to do so in a certain order?
Baldur's Gate 1 is pretty dull, Baldur's Gate 2 is decent. I'm not a huge fan, personally, but I'm just not really a fan of the real time with pause combat system it uses... and it has a lot of combat. As a complete package, it's hard not to find something to enjoy and I'd recommend anyone to give it a go.
If you mean Baldur's Gate and Planescape, they're on the same engine, but made by different companies and there's no relation story-wise.
Thanks for the reply. I had it in my mind that BG and PS:T were related for some reason. I'm about an hour into PS:T now and I'm enjoying it. I even downloaded a bunch of patches and mods for it. On vacation this week though. Too bad my work laptop doesn't have it installed.

Final Fantasy 6, 7 and X was epic. The best in the series.
I cannot believe I hear bad words regarding BG, heresy! But Fallout 1 & 2 was really great as well.

I see your point, and I agree except that Blood Omen 2 didn't really get to me like others in the series. Maybe it was because i played after I finished Defiance bit I prefer the SR, SR2, Def arc (the whole thing with janos-kain-raziel...and the showdown in avernus cathedral was just epic!). And to me I always liked Raziel more than Kain, I mean Kain is one of my favourites of all time but the amount of shit Raziel goes through throughout the series and what happens to him in the end made me care for him more...man that guy couldn't catch a break!

For some reason SnakeEater end battle always comes up when I'm asked this question.
Epic storyline and immersive gameplay combined for genuine heartfelt gaming experience.
Don't know why he (Kojima) opted for Star Sailor to sing us out though.....

while I realize that story-wise BO2 is the redheaded stepchild of the family(since it was done by a different team with no input from Amy Henning, and is hard to reconcile with the rest of the series.), I really enjoyed it as a game. gameplay-wise it was miles ahead of SR2, which, with the exception of the 5 puzzle sets bored me to tears.(mind you, I still love SR2, because it has some of the best lines ever uttered in a game, and one of my all-time favourite quotes) And out of all the games in the series, BO2's ending was one of the best simply because it was catarthic. the game was a classic straightforward revenge plot, and it delivered what it promised. and out of all the games, it, along with the bad ending of BO1 really fit the OP's description best: Kain, teh ultimate badass killed everyone who stood in his way. and the world is literally his plaything, because he is the best, not because he deserves it.
Raziel's story is deep, profound and tragic. but it evokes a whole different set of emotions when compared to Kain. and I don't think Raz would fit the OP's criteria.
that said, LoK as a whole is a masterpice series, and they'd damn well better make another game to wrap up this story soon.

Well I do admit that BO2 is better game-play wise than SR2, I mean you could decimate everything with your basic claw combo. But I guess I just have a thing against white kain

And I wholeheartedly agree that they need to make another entry in one of the best written and voiced games ever. But with Crystal Dynamics churning out Lara Croft reboots/sequels and with Amy Henning working with Naughty Dog.. I feel it's a lost cause. And I fear that the square-enix touch might ruin the series' atmosphere.
