so heres my attempt at silanah facing down raest outside darujhistan.

Basically its a tower versus tower image meant to come alive with tension from the
epic battle about to happen. It was a rush to finish, had fun with it though.

I would say it's quite epic in scale, great work

Great work Dolmen, I love the way you have represented omtose phellack, about to be "flung" by Raest.
Now all the friends that you knew in school they used to be so cool, now they just bore you.
Just look at em' now, already pullin' the plow. So quick to take to grain, like some old mule.

Nice. Gives a sense of scale to the dragon that's often lost in these pictures; you can imagine being in Raest's position and staring up at that mane blocking out the sun. I really like the way Raest is depicted as well; with the scale of Silanah, there's a danger that he could have looked somewhat ineffectual, but the central positioning, posture, and the representation of Omtose Phellack "building" up around him show him as able and willing to stand his ground. Captures the scene brilliantly.

That looks amazing. The wings are far too small but I realise the reason why you may have chosen to limit their span in this picture.

Im glad to hear you guys generally like raest weilding omtose phellack

im discussing the wingspan and anatomy with some people on DA. We basicly worked out that cool dragons were never meant to fly.

To be honest, I've always just gone with the interpretation of dragons in Terry Pratchett's Guards! Guards!. They're utterly implausible and should never be able to fly, so they must be inherently magical creatures - frankly, I think that works perfectly given what we know of the MBotF ones, so hey.

Ahh, it's no wonder Anomander chose her to be friends-with-benefits. She's the Natalie Portman of Eleint.

Actually that's more or less the explanation we get in the books. Dragons fly thanks to magic and the wings are only there for aerodynamic purposes.

In the book dragons bleed magic. it makes sense that they use magic to fly...but how then does an otataral dragon fly?

This contest is going to be tight!

This is amazing stuff, Dolmen, it really is. Love the composition, and especially the glow in Silanaha's throat ;)

Epic scene, Dolmen. I love the composition how everything in the pic serves to make Silanah look huge and terrifying, and the city in the background looks very pretty.

And I agree about dragon wings, I mean, if chickens can't fly I can't even imagine what it would take to lift a massive, four-limbed scale covered lizard. Without magic, that is ;)

thanks Is, glad you like how it all came out :-). I think the malazan worlds idea of dragons links them closely to forces of nature rather than actual animals. I think Wyvals would look more anatomically correct since they either glide on a dragons power or feed of it. I forget.

I havent heard whether your submitting something for the dragons contest or not. You should, it would be great to see what you come up with

I agree, I think of the Wyval as more lizard-like and scrawny.

Well I was going to and I even finished it (grudgingly) but I never got it quite right so I don't think I will enter the contest. Actually I don't think it would have mattered if I was amazingly pleased with it considering the competition. Thinking I will practice hard and wait for another to come around.

i'd still rather like to see it. perhaps we can convince you that it's better than you think ;)

One side note: Raest is dead. Really, really dead. His flesh had become dry and brittle, and using his magic+Silannah and Co. going to town on him really tears him up before he pulls his disappearing act (or has it pulled on him by Kruppe). Just thought he should look more beat up. It looks epic though. I like how you made it so that everything around Raest is dead and frozen, and Silannah is standing between him and the city. Cheers man! It's a great picture.

agreed, even if it wont get into the comp we'd all like to see what you managed to produce. Personally I think its not so much the competition as it is the chance to try your skills at something new. You still get something out of it either way ;) !

@masonofdeath: your right, raest should look a hell of a deal more damaged. If i manage to redo this scene I'll definately try get that across.
