Read Goosebumps and Archie comics when I was a kid

Read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas when I was a teen

Picked up GotM in the airport before going to Vegas at around 24 and have read most of the series and a bunch of other fantasy in the last few years.

as i have limited reading experience, i'll say i started with:

Eddings' - Malloreon, (i actually read it first before,)
Eddings' - Belgariad

then more eddings' elenium and tamuli,

jordan's - WOT, i stopped since book 9

tried to read SOT but couldn't get past book 1, that's a record for me,

tried to read ASOIAF, but still locked to book 1 GOT, may read and continue who knows,

then eddings' again with dreamers book 4, as i got it on sale and haven't read all of it,

saw book 1 of malazan, GOTM then its one-of-a-kind ride, never looked back
and can't get enough malazan
i'm currently on re-read mode, may try out other titles i have seen posted here and there:
Black Co, Wise Man's Fear and others that i have of a mind to try(hoping not to disappoint)

I have never been a big genre reader. I read Lewis and Tolkien as a kid, but didn't start getting into fantasy until I was in college. I had a roommate from Sydney, and I told her how I tend to like longer books better than shorter ones because of the potential for character development and more complicated stories, so she told me to read Eddings. Then I dropped out of school, and a friend of mine saw me reading Eddings for like the 10th time, and he gave me some other stuff to read, including Goodkind and Jordan. Jordan led me to the online forums, where I picked up Martin and Erikson. So it basically goes like this:

Lewis
Tolkien
Anne Rice
Stephen King
Eddings
Goodkind
Jordan
Martin
Erikson

The friend at work also gave me Feist, but to be honest, I found Goodkind more enjoyable than Feist.

hi there, ms terez, before i joined here, i was checking out the topics about Jordan's WOT series,
just curious, did BS maintain the idiosyncrasies of most of RJ's characters or did he somehow altered them,
was thinking since AMOL will be coming out by nxt yr(?) i might as well finish the series
actually i'm planning to buy KOD by nxt wk,

curious how did you find goodkind more enjoyable to feist,

back to topic, i remember i also bought a 2nd hand book of Anne McAffrey, along with Edding's dreamers book 4, its Dragon-something, have never read it actually,
will look it up my room, when i get the time,

He certainly tried, but there are varying opinions as to how successful he was. Most think he did better with some characters than others, but there are also varying opinions on which characters he didn't quite get.

Feist just bored me to tears. Even though part of me recognized that the story was interesting, the prose seemed almost dusty to me. It's been years, and I only read the first 4 books, but I seem to remember that the story was told in a sort of minimalist fashion that I can't stand (despite being a skimmer). Goodkind was at least interesting, though he started to annoy me greatly as the books went on.

@terez - ok, i must read it for myself and judge how good his execution on RJ's WOT characters,

i seem to have lost my anne mcaffrey book, when i looked in my old room, i hoped it wasn't put on the garbage by my aunt, maybe it was just misplaced, will try to find it again,

Read Harry Potter.. and then nothing else for several years. I decided to get into reading about 18 months ago and started with LOTR and 1984 and a couple other classics like Catcher in the Rye. I then heard about GRRM from another forum and loved that so I googled top epic fantasy stuff and saw the Malazan series listed. Read GotM, then read a bunch of other stuff like the Dark Tower, and then a year or so later got back into the Malazan world and am still pluggin away at it.

I have a terrible memory when it comes to recalling this sort of stuff, but I'll do my best...

Various stuff. I remember there was Deltora Quest and The Seventh Tower in terms of fantasy series, read these in first, second, and third grade.

Harry Potter. I believe I started reading these when I was 7, as Prisoner of Azkaban came out about a month after I started reading the books.

Lord of the Rings. Age 10, started reading them after I saw the movie which I instantly fell in love with.

The Dark Tower. Age 12 or 13. For some reason the trade paperback of The Waste Lands with the demon train (BLAINE) on the cover caught my eye and got me to read the series.

A Song of Ice and Fire. Age 12 or 13, I remember this because I started reading them a year or so before A Feast for Crows came out.

The Wheel of Time. I believe I read them when I was 13-14, stopped at book 8 though.

Malazan Book of the Fallen. Pretty sure I was 14 when I started reading these.

I hadn't read too much before picking up Malazan and what I had read was pretty random.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms

World War Z.
