Don't really like it. OK, it's nice to have something unique and different for a limited edition (that is the whole point after all), but the original cover was so iconic that it would always be a hard act to follow and I don't think this one does enough.

Oh yes, the first cover was so iconic that it was a blatant re-paint of the same cover the artist had used for two other (non-malazan) books...

You know who I could see fitting the cover girl (and not the other way around as I doubt the artist was trying for this) - Lostara Yil. She's got the dancer flexibility for the pose, does a fair amount of secret stabbing throughout the book and oh look, a Pardu tatoo on her shoulder blades.

Now if only the smoky clouds were made of bloodflies...

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

I suppose I could see that.

Still don't like it as much as the old cover though. Don't care if it was a reprint. If they're going to do a new cover, I think they really could have done something cooler.

Wow! I love the artwork. But...it gives too much away. And it's a bit Jesus-like, isn't it? Is it internal artwork?

Now that's cool.

Of course it's internal artwork. And yeah, it's jesus-like. I mean, he WAS crucified, after all.

Interesting pic. It's missing a few things though (arrow, blood, his legs)

He doesn't look like someone who's in the process of being crucified, but rather like he's taking a nap. Also, I think a bit more black would do the whole thing some good, Coltaine looks like a grandpa and the crows like pigeons.. More feeling, please.

That said, I DO like it. I like the angle. Still, could be better.

This.
I realize the grey effect is meant to be motion, but crows are black and that's being lost.

It's not what I was hoping for regarding this scene, but it's alright I guess. I really would have liked to see this scene painted from the view of Squint in Aren - maybe even showing him in distress in the foreground with the scene of this in the background and the trail to Aren in the scene. I can appreciate the intamacy of the two images posted so far, but I really hope that there are some grander scenes depicted in the art for DG.

True, would be awesome to have Squint's view in Aren.

Looks like the lettered and numbered editions will have different dust jacket illustrations.

Maybe they've paid attention to the forumites discussing this and swapped out the cover image.

So... do you think we could get a campaign going to have Mappo and Icarium in the desert be the new cover? Or Coltaine breaking Gesler's nose?

(I like the new cover and despite the slight spoilerish overtones to it, almost everyone who buys one of these super-special editions has read the book and knows it well.)
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Not how I envisaged Coltaine at all, and those crows do look an awful lot like pigeons.

Hope the other artwork has more of the grandeur about them, and feature more than 1 person.

From the SP post -

Quote

The lettered edition will include everything in the numbered, plus the following features:

  • A completely different dust jacket

Why would you expect the crows to look like anything other than crows?

The Felisin/Sha'ik/Sorry/whatever piece is much more polished; in that respect, I think it makes a better cover.

Then again, the Coltaine cover that's up now could just be a rough draft. Goodness knows this still gets claimed as the cover for GotM, when the final version is actually this.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

You can see a high res jpeg of the new cover art here.

Cheers,

Definitely a good improvement from the earlier cover. I am way more willing to pay for this cover than the prior one.

The new cover is fantastic.

I just wish they had already started working on the next few books so we won't have to wait a couple of decades to have the whole collection.

Agreed, this does look really generic. Who is that supposed to be on the cover? Felisin, I seriously can't think of anyone who would remotely fit that pic?
The original artwork captures the essence of the story with 4 horsemen riding from the whirlwind. The GOTM was great as it showed Rake, Moon's Spawn and a bunch of Great Ravens and I like it far more than the original GOTM cover.
