So I finish Old Man's War, sit the book down, and the spine comes unstuck. I was not amused, I'll tell you. It's a new book and was handled with care. There's no damage to the spine itself or any other part of the book, it just decided to separate itself from the rest of the book.

I assume glue is the way to go about reattaching it. Is there any specific type of glue I should use? Anything else I should know about reattaching it?

You can use whatever glue you like, but I'd take some paper and test it on a little spot, just to make sure it doesn't darken the pages.

EDIT- I use rubber cement

I've got some links to "caring for your collection" guides, but none of them include spine repair - probably because the State Library has courses on how to repair damaged books (you can't give that info away for free!).

Anyways, for future reference:

Caring for your collections: books and bound material

How to make an archival corrugated phase box

Caring for your collections: four-flap enclosure

Other advice on preservation of photos, film, digital images, as well as disaster recovery (eg. dealing with mold, insect infestation, water damage etc.)

Copydex is the standard glue for repairing spines and reattaching unstuck pages. Or at least, it was when I was a school librarian assistant.

Thanks. I'll see if copydex is available in NZ. I don't think rubber cement is. We will have equivalents for both though, surely. If I can't find them, I'll pester the librarians down at uni about what they use.

I've used a hot glue gun to repair a couple of paperback whose pages had detached from their covers/spine. Probably not the best method out there, but I had a hot glue gun handy, and it seems to have worked.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Well, since we're on the subject, some pages have come unstuck from my hardback copy of AGOT. Just a couple near the beginning, and a couple near the end. Same fix as above? What would you use to apply the glue to the pages?

I should probably buy ASOIAF in paperback so as not to continue abusing my first editions.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

If they're first editions, I'd take them to a specialist book repairer rather than attempting to repair them myself. An unprofessional repair job could badly damage their potential value
