Coming toward the end of the season now. Some shows end this week, some next week.

Sacred Beasts was frustrating. An overall decent concept, marred by my own irritation that the terminology matches what I've written in my own work (coincidence, but still), as well as a generally poor, cliché story with predictable and dull characters.

Finale for Otome is this weekend, that has probably been overall the best show of the season for me. Interested to see how it ends.

Demon Slayer E24 is... well, nonexistant. It hasn't gone onto CR yet. On any of the six platforms I have the app on (XBone, PS4, PC, phone, spare phone, tablet). Annoying.

Any of you highly sexy fuckers watch Kabaneri? Good? Bad? Meh?

It's Attack on Titan (made by a lot of the same people) but with trains, guns, and zombies, and only a couple core characters that can fly around rather than whole armies of them. Action scenes and the animation in general are very good. The whole visual aesthetic is dark-plus-glowing-stuff, eg. lots of night time with raging fires (in contrast to AoT's usual sunny daytimes and lots of brown). Plot isn't very good at all - watch it for the flying steampunk kungfu action and the over-the-top giant blood splatters whenever anyone gets stabbed/ bitten, but expect to groan at most plot developments.

Wait, that's not right. What platform is this / what's the full name you're seeing?

Netflix, Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress The Battle of Unato.

Ok, this is just weird.

So there's 4 entries in the Kabaneri franchise now:

The original TV series (12 episodes)
Gathering Light (movie #1)
Burning Life (movie #2)
The Battle of Unato (movie #3)

And apparently they very much have to go in that order. I haven't seen any of the movies, but the web is saying that Gathering Light starts off with a quick recap of the TV series, but otherwise all 3 films are independent and the plot flows from the TV series into movie 1, into movie 2, into movie 3 - none of the movies are standalone.

But the licensing is all over the place. Amazon has the TV series subtitled. Crunchyroll got the rights to dub the series in English, but couldn't work it out with Amazon to sell their dub to Amazon, so they just made a Blu-ray of the series with their dub that cant' be streamed anywhere. But then Funimation is selling a different Blu-ray version. And then nobody has licensed the first two movies, while for some reason Netflix has licensed the 3rd movie and they've chopped it up into 3 half-hour "episodes".

Very weird.

So yeah, you're looking at a chopped up movie that is missing its two prequel movies and the original TV series that actually introduced the world and characters. If you watch it I'm sure the action scenes will still be pretty but good luck knowing what the heck is going on!

Any recommendations for military fantasy anime? Enjoyed original series of berserker but not so much the newer ones. Just finished watching record of grandest war on Netflix and didn't mind some of the military aspects of it.

Basically looking for the malazan of anime of such a thing exists?

Attack on Titan, Saga of Tanya the Evil, Alderamin on the Sky and Izetta; The Last Witch would be my go-to recs.

I was kinda disappointed in the ending for O Maidens. A lot of build up from last episode just kind of fizzled out with a few plot threads left too ambiguous but the overall story wrapped up too tightly to make a second season easy.

If by military you're looking for warfare, strategy and tactics porn, most of the above won't really fill that. Keep in mind the only malazan esque thing I can think of is Legend of the Galactic Heroes though it is a space opera.(The original, fuck the remake)

Alderamin is decent but id reccomend it only after you've already sampled some better low hanging fruits.

The Legend of Arslan I think is the best one to come out in recent years.

Legend of the Legendary heroes: Pretty cool if you like fantasy anime. It does unfortunately have one of those read the manga episodes but it was a good watch for what it was.

Once you've finished those 3 you can also take a glance at Altair. I enjoyed it but the pacing was REALLY rushed towards the end. Altair is available on prime.

Aside from that Anime doesn't have much within this sub genre, kinda niche. Most military anime trends towards sci-fi or there's also the occasional historical anime where mileage varies.

On the subject of GalHer, series two dropped out of nowhere.

Black Fox preview episode was interesting.

D'rek may be interested to hear if she hasn't already that a Shirobako movie is on the way...

:apt: :apt: :apt:

Re: LotGH: Yup i saw that on my crunchyroll app and im like what???? Still trash as they condensed an epic fight into a less than a single episode. I really would like to know what the hell this adaptation team is thinking. The director of the show is completely incompetent.

On the subject of D'rek, she became an anime. Isekai'd Into A World Without Ready Availability of Books, I Go on a Quest to Create All The Books. Ep1 was pretty ok.

Finished Yu-No. The ending was... messy, to say the least. Shame, because the first portion of it was really enjoyable.

Two more generic pics - a harem (of sorts) where the MC likes two girls who are both in love with his best friend, and the plain librarian is in love with him. First episode seemed passably fun.

Isekai madness - Prodigies. Oh god, where to fucking start here. Here are seven 17 year olds. They are also the world's best doctor, swordswoman, journalist, engineer, CEO, magician and prime minister respectively, whilst also being in high school. It's everything that's wrong with the isekai genre but I can't stop myself. I can't tell if it's meant to be a deconstructing pisstake like Okaa-san Online was, or if it's actually serious about itself.

Kingdom is probably the closest to Malazan, AFAIK, though some people say the anime is a terrible adaptation of the manga. I've not seen/read either so I don't really know. Seconding LP's recco of Legend of Arslan, though, as it does have some of the same feel - it's not a world-spanning character-driven epic like Malazan, but it does have plenty of twists and clever battles.

I love it, it's super cute and comfy. (Looks like the official english title is the less awkward Ascendance of a Bookworm)

Seis Manos

Someone talk to me. Looks fairly interesting.

Saw the trailer a little while back. The animation looked ugly to me, and the plot didn't sound very interesting. Also it's made in the U.S., so is this even the right thread for that?

I'm always pretty wary of "Isekai but there's a twist" shows, but I just checked out Kemono Michi / Rise Up and it is utterly bananas in a good way. The first 10 minutes is a pro wrestler who wants to open a pet store getting transported to a fantasy world where he immediately suplexes the resident princess for daring to suggest he should harm demon animals to save the kingdom, and then he goes on the run from the castle guards in minimal clothing. It's definitely stupid but juuust self-aware enough that I found it hilarious.

Motherfuckwaddamn! I guess that Ep 13 of MSG Origin was the last of the show.. :( I could have sworn it was 7 hour long eps divided in half. That really was a fantastic watch over these past 14 weeks(they took one off) and I’m extremely disappointed not getting an episode tonight when I was fully expecting to. By far my favorite MSG of the few I’ve seen.

You're right, looks like the 2019 series was only 13 episodes. Good thing there's a bajillion previous gundam series you can still check out?

Maybe! Though Netflix doesn't seem as interested in building up a backlog of past series as other platforms.

Instantly added to my list, as I love suplexes.

Feels like kind of a slow season overall...

Small details, too. The intro, a different character is looking at the screen each time. It's a nice little touch.

Much like JoJo, this show knows it's fucking stupid, absolutely crazy, and just downs seven jugs of Datura and says you know what fuck it, deliriant psychosis time.
